Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart sweeps past Coleman into district title game.
MOUNT PLEASANT - The Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Irish will play for a district title on their home floor on Friday night, after they dispatched Coleman 60-25 on Wednesday night. It was the third win for the Irish over the Comets this season. Noah Zeien led the Irish offense with 18 points on the night. Grady Pieratt and Brody Cherry each scored 11 points for Sacred Heart, as eight different players got into the scorebook for the Irish. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart (21-2) will meet Bay City All Saints on Friday night in the district championship game.
Beal City overcomes slow first half to defeat Evart in districts
BEAL CITY - The Beal City Aggies led by just two points at the half against league rival Evart in a district semifinal on Wednesday night, but they outscored the Wildcats 46-18 in the second half to pull away for a 72-42 win. For the Aggies, it was their third win of the season over Evart (5-16). Beal City were led by Cayden Smith’s 19-point night. Josh Wilson and Kyle Martin each scored 14 points for the Aggies. Beal City (19-4) will host Beaverton on Friday night in the district title game.
Beaverton knocks off Pine River to advance to district final
BEAL CITY - Beaverton benefitted from some hot outside shooting to build a first half lead, and they held on from there to score a 69-55 division three district semifinal win over Pine River on Wednesday night. The Beavers connected on six three-pointers in the first half, as they took a 38-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Layk Woodruff scored 25 points to lead Beaverton on the night, including 17 in the second half. Landon Love added 17 points, and Ian Roberts chipped in with 14. Xander Martin was the lone Buck scorer in double digits, checking in with 10 points. Beaverton (12-11) advances to face Beal City in the district championship game on Friday night at Beal City.
Ludington beats Manistee to advance to District Final
MANISTEE - The Ludington Orioles beat the Manistee Mariners 67-38 in district semifinal action Wednesday night. The Orioles got out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Orioles were led by David Shillinger with 20 points and Gage Jones chipped in with 15. For Manistee Jacob Scharp led the way with 14 points. Ludington will play Reed City for the district title on Friday, for Manistee their season comes to an end with an 11-13 record.
Reed City comes from behind to beat Hart, advance to District Title game
MANISTEE - The Reed City Coyotes trailed by eight at halftime but were able to fight back and beat the Hart Pirates 57-42. The Coyotes used a huge third quarter to propel themselves to victory, they were led by Marcos Ciudad-Real with 24 points and Landen Jackson had 14. For Hart Blake Weirich had 14 points. Reed City advances to the District Final against Ludington on Friday, Hart’s season comes to an end with a 13-11 record.
Johannesburg-Lewiston powers past Forest Area on senior night
JOHANNESBURG - On the night they celebrated their five senior players, the Johannesburg-Lewiston girls basketball program got 35 points from those seniors in a 59-11 win over Forest Area. Jayden Marlatt led the way for the Cardinals with 17 points, and teammate Emerson Wertman chipped in with 13 points. Fellow seniors Cassie Tallman had four points, and Shyla Rahn had one point. Rosie Gascho, who was injured earlier in the season, was able to be on the floor with her fellow seniors for the opening tip-off before being subbed out. The Cardinals entered the night with a chance a share of the Ski Valley Conference title, but with Gaylord St. Mary’s loss to Inland Lakes, the Cardinals finished second in the league standings. Johannesburg-Lewiston (16-5, 12-3 Ski Valley) closes out the regular season at home against Pellston on Thursday night. Forest Area travels to Mancelona on Thursday.
Inland Lakes claims outright Ski Valley Conference championship
GAYLORD - The Inland Lakes Bulldogs used an impressive first half defensive effort to avenge an early season loss to Gaylord St. Mary, claiming an outright Ski Valley Conference title in the process, 44-38. The Bulldogs held the Snowbirds to just three first half field goals, as they built a 21-10 halftime advantage. Brooklyn LaBrecque and Chloe Robinson would lead a balanced Bulldog attack with 11 points apiece. Payton Glasby led the Snowbirds with a 13-point effort. The Bulldogs entered the contest with a one-game lead over the Snowbirds in the conference standings. A Gaylord St. Mary win would’ve opened the door to a three-way tie for the league title between Inland Lakes, St. Mary and Johannesburg-Lewiston.
Traverse City Curling Club hosts 2024 Mixed Doubles USA National Championship
TRAVERSE CITY—The strongest mixed doubles teams in the nation are being hosted by Traverse City Curling Club this week for the 2024 Mixed Doubles USA National Championship. “The fact that the founders of this club opted to go all-in and get the best, puts us in a position to host a tournament like this,” Traverse City Curling Club executive director Kate Sterken said. The Club opened just a year ago. “I mean we play in a lot of arenas and other clubs that have been around for dozens of years so it’s cool to be in a facility that’s so new,” USCA National Team member Ben Richardson said. “I love how welcoming everyone is it feels like it’s already a curling club, it’s not a big arena it’s a community, and it’s just a beautiful town,” his partner, Taylor Anderson added.
Traverse City West and Cadillac win Girls Skiing State Championships
HARBOR SPRINGS - The girls ski programs at Traverse City West and Cadillac both laid claim to their sixth state championships on Monday afternoon. Traverse City West edged out rival Traverse City Central to win the Division One State Championship at Boyne Highlands Resort. It was Traverse City West’s second consecutive state title. The Titans’ Olivia Bageris finished second in both the slalom and giant slalom races to lead the way for T.C. West. The Titans placed four skiers in the top nine of the afternoon’s slalom racing. Traverse City Central’s Quinn Gerber was third in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom to pace the Trojans’ team effort. Over at Nub’s Nob in the Division Two State Finals, the Cadillac Vikings showed amazing consistency racking up 36 points in both the slalom and giant slalom portions of the contest, as they defeated Harbor Springs to claim their second state championship in the past three seasons. Onalee Wallis finished second in both races for Cadillac, with teammate Avery Meyer claiming third in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom. On an individual note, Petoskey’s Marley Spence won both the slalom and giant slalom state championships.
Elk Rapids pulls away for district-opening win over Mancelona
CHARLEVOIX - In a district-opening matchup of conference champions, the Elk Rapids Elks used a massive third quarter scoring barrage to eliminate Mancelona 69-43 on Monday night. The Lake Michigan Conference champion Elks outscored the Ironmen 27-10 in the third quarter to take a 58-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Haven Somers scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the Elks’ scoring outburst. In addition to Somers, Elk Rapids’ Max Ward scored 13 points, Noah Hilley added 12 and Owen Spencer pitched in with 10. Ryan Naumcheff led Mancelona in scoring with a 10-point effort. The Ski Valley Conference champion Ironmen see their season come to a close with a 17-6 record.

Former Traverse City St. Francis linebacker and captain, Max Bullough, has always been a leader. And now– he finds himself in a leadership role at one of the most highly regarded football programs in the nation, the University of Notre Dame. “Are you a competitor? Do you compete in everything that you do?” That was the mindset that helped Bullough become one of the top linebacker recruits in the country out of high school. It allowed him to play as a true freshman at Michigan State and earn first team Freshman All-American honors. He wrapped up his career as a Spartan as a two-time captain, recording 299 tackles, 31 TFLs, eight sacks, and three interceptions under one of the best defensive minds in college football, Mark Dantonio.
Traverse City Central beats the Mid-Michigan Raptors to advance to regional final
MIDLAND - The Traverse City Central Trojans beat the Mid-Michigan Raptors 9-1 in the regional semifinal as they advance to the regional final. The Trojans had eight different scorers for their nine goals as they now extend their winning streak to four games. Traverse City will take on the winner of Midland Dow vs Midland in the regional final on February 28th, as the Raptors season comes to an end.
Benzie Central’s historic wrestling season ends in state semifinals
KALAMAZOO - For the second straight season, the Benzie Central Huskies saw their wrestling postseason run come to an end at the hands of St. Louis in Kalamazoo. This time, a 37-22 defeat on Saturday morning, the Huskies were eliminated in the Division Four State Semifinal match, their deepest playoff run in program history. “I’m extremely proud of our kids, our community,” Huskies’ co-head coach Cody VanDonkelaar said after the match. “Just all around, a lot of pride right now.” The match started at 113 pounds, and St. Louis’s lineup was particularly strong in the lighter weight classes, as the Sharks were able to record pins in three of the first four matches, and they built a 21-0 lead. “We knew they were tough down low,” VanDonkelaar said.

Baldwin claims West Michigan “D” League title with win over Pentwater
PENTWATER - In a battle of the top two teams in the West Michigan “D” League, the Baldwin Panthers jumped out to an early lead, and held off a second half rally by Pentwater to lay claim to the outright league title with a 57-45 win on Thursday evening. The Panthers took an 11-point lead into the half, 28-17. They would expand that lead to 17 points in the third quarter, before the Falcons found their game, and closed the gap to just seven points heading into the fourth quarter. D.J. Baldridge led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points, with Louie Jackson adding 17 for Baldwin. Kaleb Brown paced Pentwater with a 16-point effort, with Will Werkema-Grondsma chipping in with 10. Baldwin (17-4, 16-1 WMDL) closed the regular season by winning 10 of their last 11 contests. The Panthers will take on the winner of Monday’s Manistee Catholic Central vs. Mason County Eastern game in the second round of district play at Marion on Wednesday night. Pentwater (16-6, 15-3 WMDL) is on the other side of the same district bracket. They will face off with host Marion on Monday evening.
Ludington shakes off slow start to defeat Manistee
LUDINGTON - The Ludington Orioles dug themselves out of an early hole to defeat rival Manistee on Thursday night, 51-43. The Mariners started off hot from beyond the three-point line, using an 11-2 run to close out the first quarter to take a 19-9 lead after just eight minutes of play. From there, the Orioles’ defense would clamp down, allowing Manistee to notch just 24 more points over the remaining three quarters. Ludington (15-6, 10-2 West Michigan Conference - Lakes Division) hosts Benzie Central in their regular season finale on Friday night. Manistee (10-12, 2-10 WMC-L) will prepare to host district play next week, taking on Big Rapids on Monday evening.
Sault Ste. Marie beats Manistique, advances to regional final
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils hockey team ended the regular season ranked #6 in Division 3 with a 19-5-1 record. Tonight, they welcomed in the Manistique Emeralds who support an 11-13-0 record. They beat Kingsford Tuesday evening 5-2 to advance to the Regional 18 semi-final in the Soo. Blue Devils scored first around five and a half minutes into the first when Garrett Gorsuch lasered the puck past Emerald goalie Alex Noble. Manistique responded late in the first with a goal of its own. Forty-one seconds left in the first, Austin Hinkson passed to Carter Levinge...he slipped the puck past Blue Devils goalie Cam Labadie to tie the game up 1-1.
Charlevoix beats Mancelona in final regular season game
MANCELONA - The Charlevoix Rayders beat the Mancelona Ironmen 65-37 on Thursday night as both teams closed out their regular seasons. Joe Gaffney had a game-high 25 points for Charlevoix and Aiden Dixon had a team-high 11 points for Mancelona. Charlevoix ends the regular season with a 17-5 record, they’ll play the winner of Elk Rapids and Mancelona in the district semifinal, Mancelona ends the regular season with a 17-5 record as well.
