Mason County Central records big WMC crossover win over Fremont
SCOTTVILLE - The Mason County Central Spartans girls used a big first quarter to open up a lead on their way to an impressive 59-50 West Michigan Conference crossover victory over Lakes Division-leading Fremont on Wednesday. The Spartans jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first eight minutes of play, expanding that lead to 38-25 at the half. The Packers closed the gap in the third quarter, pulling within five points late before Mallory Miller hit a three just before the third quarter buzzer to give the Spartans a 50-42 edge heading into the final frame. Miller led Mason County Central with an 18-point night. Eva Hradel added 13 points, and Riley Mast chipped in with 10. Fremont’s Riley Chase led all scorers with 19 points on the night. Mason County Central (16-4) hosts Hesperia on Friday night. Fremont (15-4) will return home to face Manistee on Friday night.
McBain remains undefeated in the Highland Conference, beating Evart
EVART - The McBain Ramblers beat the Evart Wildcats 64-23 in Highland Conference action Wednesday night. The Ramblers were led by Evan Haverkamp, he had a game-high 14 points. McBain moves to 19-2 on the season, Evart falls to 4-14.
Petoskey keeps season alive in triple overtime thriller against Cadillac
CADILLAC— The Petoskey Northmen took on Cadillac on Wednesday night in a regional semifinal. Petoskey came out on top 5-4 in 3OT. With the win, the Northmen advance to Wednesday’s regional final against the winner of Thursday’s game between Cheboygan and the Traverse City Bay Reps. The solo scorer in the first period was Petoskey’s Chase LaFaive. Petoskey nabbed two goals in the second period from Madden Pateman and Thomas Guiney. Cadillac had three in the second, scored by Gabe Outman, Bjorn Tracy, and Cadyn Rossell to tie things 3-3 at the end of the period.
Northern Michigan semi-pro football team heads to Miami Sunshine Bowl this weekend
PETOSKEY—The Northern Michigan Panthers had a perfect 9-0 season in the Great Michigan Football Conference, taking home the Greater Midwest Football Conference trophy back in August. The league runs all summer long, with games May through August. “It’s kind of a grind,” head coach John Delis said. “These are guys who have families and games are pretty much every Saturday [of the summer] and we practice on Sundays.” The Conference win secured them a spot in this weekend’s coveted Sunshine Bowl in Miami, Florida.
Cadillac Heritage Christian boys and girls get wins over Grand Traverse Academy
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Heritage Christian Patriots got a pair of wins against the Grand Traverse Academy Mustangs Thursday night. The girls game came down to the wire with the Patriots getting the 46-43 win in overtime, Lovina Smith had 15 and Lily Bigger had 13 for the Patriots. The Patriots won the boys game 43-28 but trailed 16-6 after the first quarter and stormed back for the win. The Cadillac Heritage Christian girls team moved to 10-2 and the boys team to 3-7. Grand Traverse academy girls fell to 9-8 and the boys team to 2-17
