Beal City beats Evart to earn fifth straight win
EVART - The Beal City Aggies beat the Evart Wildcats 71-47 on Thursday night in Highland Conference action. The win marked five straight for Beal City as they were led in scoring by Cayden Smith with 19 points, Austin Small and Owen McKenny both chipped in with 13 as well. For Evart, Lucas Johnson led the way with 13 points. Beal City now improves to 11-2 on the season, they’ll take on Pine River in their next game, Evart falls to 3-6 they’ll take on Baldwin in their next game.
Ferris State Hockey prepares to take on Lake Superior State in home-and-home
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State Bulldogs and Lake Superior State Lakers are getting ready to face off in their 2nd and 3rd matchups this season. The Lakers beat the Bulldogs 5-1 in Big Rapids back in December. The Bulldogs have dropped their past two games, losing to Minnesota State on bac-to-back nights, while the Lakers have won their last 2 beating Northern Michigan back-to-back. While many of the players maybe experiencing their first home-and-home matchups in college, Ferris State head coach, Bob Daniels has done it numerous times. “The way this turned out, that we’re playing home and home. It reminds me of the days, years ago, we used to do this all the time. We played a lot of home and homes with Michigan, Michigan State, Western.” Said Coach Daniels. “I’m somewhat used to it. Our guys aren’t, so it’ll be a new experience for them. But, you know, I think, for us to have success against Lake State, we’re going to have to find a way to match their tenacity.” Bulldog’s forwards Holden Doell and Nick Nardecchia know just how important it is to be able to get two wins.
Traverse City West has big offensive performance in non-conference win
MANISTEE - The Traverse City West Titans set a new high-water mark for the season, as they posted 63 points in their convincing 63-35 victory over Manistee on Wednesday. The Titans scored in double figures in each of the four quarters, highlighted by a 22-point second quarter that helped them build a 36-12 halftime advantage. Grace Bohrer led the Titans on offense with a 14-point performance. Madyson Sebela added 12 for Traverse City West. Jayna Edmondson led Manistee in scoring with 12 points as well. Traverse City West (3-7) travels to Petoskey on Thursday night. Manistee (4-4) is off until Tuesday, Jan. 23 when they host Muskegon Oakridge.
Mason County Central hangs on for big non-conference win over Glen Lake
SCOTTVILLE - The Mason County Central Spartans won a matchup of two girls basketball teams off to strong starts this season, as they topped visiting Glen Lake 57-42 on Wednesday evening. Mallory Miller led the way for the Spartans, pouring in a game-high 26 points. Grace Weinert chipped in with a dozen for Mason County Central. Glen Lake had just four players score in the contest, but three of them got into double figures. Hailey Anderson led the way with 13. Lydia Fosmore had 12, and Eleanor Valkner chipped in with 11. The Spartans held a slim 25-21 lead at the half, but used a 15-5 third quarter to build a 14-point lead going into the fourth. Glen Lake would battle back in the fourth, pulling within six points, but the Spartans were able to hold off the Laker rally to preserve the victory.
Big Rapids tops Cadillac on Salute to Service Military Appreciation Night
CADILLAC - The Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Cadillac Vikings 3-1 on Salute to Service Military Appreciation Night at the Wexford Civic Center. Big Rapids got two goals in the first period with Wyatt Skiera netting the first and Seth Perdue netting the 2nd and 3rd goals for the Cardinals on the night. Cadillac got a goal back in the third period thanks to Kadin Hawkins. Cristen Brandsma, the mother of Cadillac goalie Nicholas Brandsma, was amazed to see all the community support. “It’s amazing to me that the varsity program continues to put so much time and energy into this game, then what I realize as we prepare is there are so many people in our community that are prior military service, are active in the reserves right now. So, yeah, it’s a pretty special event to see everybody and to see people coming out in the community to say thank you.” Said Brandsma. With the win Big Rapids moves to 8-8-1 on the year, they’ll take on St. Clair Shores Lakeview in their next game, Cadillac falls to 6-9-0 they’ll take on Davison next.
Lake City beats Manton for their 8th straight win
LAKE CITY - The Lake City Trojans beat the Manton Rangers 68-34 to claim sole position atop the Highland Conference and claim their 8th straight win. The Trojans led for the entire game as MacKenzie Bisballe led the team with 31 points and Alison Bisballe had 22. For Manton Lauren Wilder had 12 and Aubrey Hiller had 11. Lake City is now 8-2 on the season and they’ll take on McBain in their next game, Manton fall to 8-2 and they’ll host Houghton Lake in their next game.
Ball State women dominate second half to take win over Central Michigan in ‘Hoops for Hunger’ game
MOUNT PLEASANT— The Central Michigan women’s basketball team fell to MAC-leading Ball State on Wednesday 79-47 in their annual Hoops for Hunger game. At half, the BSU Cardinals led by just four, 35-31. But over the next two quarters the Chippewas would be outshot 44-16. The loss moves the Chippewas overall record to 2-12 on the season and 1-4 in MAC play. As for the BSU Cardinals, they advance to 15-2 on their season and 5-0 in the MAC.
Jim Harbaugh interviews with Atlanta Falcons for head coach job after talking with LA Chargers
ATLANTA (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, his second interview in two days. The Falcons announced the interview with Harbaugh, who is exploring a return to the NFL after leading Michigan to the national championship. The Los Angeles Chargers announced Monday that Harbaugh had interviewed for their head coaching vacancy. Harbaugh was the San Francisco 49ers’ coach from 2011-14 before nine seasons at Michigan. The Falcons offered no details about the interview with Harbaugh.
Mancelona edges Bellaire to sit alone atop the Ski Valley standings
MANCELONA - The Mancelona Ironmen held off a late rally to earn a 50-49 win over Bellaire on Tuesday night in a matchup of the last two unbeaten teams in Ski Valley Conference play. The Ironmen jumped out to a 19-10 lead after one quarter of play, and then led 32-25 heading into halftime. Mancelona would carry 43-37 lead into the fourth quarter, where the Eagles would close the gap, but ultimately could not pull out the win. Ivan Kuzmanoski led a balanced Mancelona attack with 15 points. Bellaire’s Jayden Hanson led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Gladwin boys hoops overcome conference foe Beaverton
GLADWIN— The Gladwin boys basketball team topped the Beaverton Beavers at home on Tuesday night 57-49. Leading the Flying G’s to victory was sophomore Ben Verellen with 18 points and five rebounds. Verellen filled in on the night for typical starting point guard Seth Mead who is currently out due to injury. The win moves the Flying G’s to 5-5 on the season and 3-4 in the Jack Pine Conference. Gladwin will look to continue its winning ways on Thursday when they travel to Harrison. As for the Beavers, this loss was their fifth straight. They’ll look to snap the streak against Clare at home on Thursday.
Mount Pleasant boys pull away from Bay City Western in Tuesday night home win
MOUNT PLEASANT― The Mount Pleasant Oilers hosted the Bay City Western Warriors on Tuesday night, winning 64-40. At the half, both teams were tied at 28. But in the second half, the Oilers were able to outscore their visitors, 36-12. The Oilers are now one a two-game winning streak and will look to extend their streak next Tuesday when they host the Midland Chemics.
Grayling outlasts Kalkaska for Lake Michigan Conference victory
KALKASKA - The Grayling Vikings erased an early deficit to earn a hard-fought 48-38 conference victory over Kalkaska on Tuesday night. The Blazers started off hot, opening up leads of 8-2 and 10-4 early in the first quarter, but the Vikings were able to come from behind to score the win. Maddox Mead paced the Viking offense with 13 points. Tristan Demlow chipped in with 10 points for Grayling. Grayling (6-4, 2-2 Lake Michigan Conference) hosts Traverse City St. Francis on Friday. Kalkaska (1-9, 0-4 LMC) travels to Harbor Springs on Friday night.
Cadillac gets resounding win over Big Rapids to remain undefeated
BIG RAPIDS - The Cadillac Vikings beat the Big Rapids Cardinals 74-38 on Tuesday night. They led from the opening tip as Eli Main drained three first quarter three pointers and the Vikings didn’t look back from there. Cadillac had three players score in double figures, as Eli Main led all scorers with 23, Charlie Howell had 18 and Kyle McGowan with 16. Caelen Kinnally had 14 for Big Rapids. The Cadillac Vikings are now 10-0 on the season and will take on Traverse City Central in their next game, Big Rapids falls to 7-3 on the season.
Cadillac Heritage Christian beats Suttons Bay for fifth win of the year
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Heritage Christian Patriots beat the Suttons Bay Norsemen 50-32 on Tuesday evening. The Patriots had three players score in double figures as Lovina Smith had 14, Regan Farmer had 13, and Lily Bigger had 12. For Suttons Bay Lauren Lint had a game high 20 points. The Patriots move to 5-1 on the year, while Suttons Bay falls to 1-7.

Jared Goff leads Lions to first playoff win in 32 years, 24-23 over Matthew Stafford and the Rams
DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff lifted his arms in the air, encouraging Ford Field fans to get even louder, before taking the final snap to end his long-suffering franchise’s skid in the playoffs. The crowd delivered, approaching the decibel level of a siren. Goff came through, too. Goff threw for a touchdown and completed a pass for a victory-sealing first down against the team that cast him away, and the Detroit Lions won a playoff game for the first time in 32 years, beating Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams 24-23 on Sunday night.
J.J. McCarthy to enter NFL draft, skip senior season at Michigan
ANN ARBOR (AP) — J.J. McCarthy, Michigan’s national-championship winning quarterback, is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft. McCarthy made the announcement Sunday, a day after being begged to stay. “The decision was not easy and how could it be — I love my teammates, I love my coaches and I love it here in Ann Arbor,” he wrote on his social media accounts. Jim Harbaugh might be the next to go.
Central Michigan men’s basketball earns third straight win
MT. PLEASANT - The Central Michigan Chippewas men’s basketball team beat the Kent State Golden Flashes 77-62 for their third consecutive victory. The Chippewas trailed at halftime but outscored Kent State 45-26 in the second half to get the win. The Chippewas had four players score in double figures, as Derrick Butler led the team with 19 points. Central Michigan shot over 50% from the field and just under 40% from three-point range. Central Michigan will take on Ohio on Tuesday in their next matchup.
