LSSU hockey takes game one against Northern Michigan
The Lake Superior State University hockey team had a tough December going 2-4-1. Friday night, they hosted the Northern Michigan Wildcats in game one of a two game series, winning 5-1. Puck drop for game two is Saturday night at 6:07 pm.
Div. 3 Sault Ste Marie hockey comes out on top against Div. 1 Okemos
SAULT STE MARIE― The division 3 Sault Ste Marie Blue Devils hockey program hosted the division 1 Okemos Eastside Stars on Friday night. The Blue Devils would come on top 3-1 to advance to 11-4-1 on the season. Sault Ste Marie will be back in action Saturday at 2 pm to No. 9 ranked Jackson Lumen Christi.
Big Rapids hockey tops Lake Orion in Overtime
TRAVERSE CITY— Thursday night, D3′s Big Rapids Cardinals played home to D1′s Lake Orion Dragons at the Rick Deneweth Memorial North South Showcase. The Cardinals would win the night 5-4 in overtime. Senior Jack Balahoski was the one to net the OT game-winner. The showcase is hosted by the Traverse City Bay Reps and includes 24 teams from all over the state. The showcase runs through Saturday, with games being played all day long. The Cardinals will look to continue their winning ways Friday against Utica Eisenhower at 1:45 pm. As for the Dragons, they’ll look to bounce back against Kingsford Friday at 4 pm.
Kingsley snaps skid with a win over Onekama
KINGSLEY - The Kingsley Stags ran out to an early lead en route to a 69-58 Northwest Conference triumph over visiting Onekama on Thursday night. The Stags started the game on a 10-0 run and led 23-14 after one quarter of play. The win snapped a 2-game losing streak for Kingsley and was their first victory of 2024. Kingsley (6-3, 3-2 NWC) steps up in class in their next game for a non-conference road matchup at Petoskey on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Onekama plays host to Mackinac Island on Monday, Jan. 15.
Bellaire holds off Forest Area for Ski Valley victory
FIFE LAKE - The Bellaire Eagles used a big run late in the second quarter to build a lead, and they would hold on in the second half to defeat Forest Area 40-32 on Thursday evening. The Eagles ran off a 16-0 run over the final 5:25 of the first half to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 26-12 halftime lead. Brooklynn Stevens scored 12 of the Eagles’ 16 points in the run, connecting on a trio of three-pointers. Bellaire (6-2, 3-1 Ski Valley Conference) moved into a tie for second place in the conference, a game behind league leader Inland Lakes. The Eagles host Johannesburg-Lewiston on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Forest Area (0-7, 0-4 SVC) travels to Pellston on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Lake City beats McBain Northern Michigan Christian for 7th straight win
McBAIN- The Lake City Trojans beat the McBain Northern Michigan Christian Comets 41-9 in Highland Conference action Thursday night. MacKenzie Bisballe led the Trojans with 17 points while Payton Hogan chipped in with 14. Lake City improves to 7-2, they’ll take on Manton in their next matchup, McBain NMC falls to 1-7 and will take on Pine River in their next game.
Charlevoix tops St. Francis to move into tie atop Lake Michigan Conference
TRAVERSE CITY - The Charlevoix Rayders continued their strong start to the 2023-2024 season with a convincing 69-55 victory over Traverse City St. Francis on Wednesday evening. The Rayders used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to open up an early lead. St. Francis would battle back and pull within a point in the second quarter before the Rayders reeled off another 10-0 run. A late St. Francis three before the halftime horn sent the game into the half with Charlevoix in front 32-24. The teams combined to make 18 three-point shots in the contest. Hunter Vollmer led the Rayders’ attack with a 20-point effort. Joe Gaffney chipped in with 18 points and Troy Nickel added 14. The Gladiators’ Max Ogden led all scorers with 27 points on the night. With the win, the Rayders (9-1, 3-1 LMC) move into a three-way tie atop the Lake Michigan Conference standings with St. Francis (4-4, 3-1 LMC) and Elk Rapids (4-6, 3-1 LMC).
McBain hands Pine River their first Highland Conference loss
PINE RIVER - The McBain Ramblers beat the Pine River Bucks 77-47 in Highland Conference action, both teams came into this one undefeated in the Highland Conference. The Ramblers held a 25-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and were able to cruise to victory. The Ramblers were led by Evan Haverkamp who had 25 points and Clayton Ingleright added 13, for the Bucks Eli Smith had a team-high 11 points. McBain moves to 7-1 on the season and will take on Houghton Lake in their next game, Pine River falls to 8-2, they’ll take on Beal City in their next game.
Colder weather allows for I-500 crews to ice up race track
SAULT STE. MARIE — The 55th running of the International 500 Snowmobile Endurance races is just over three weeks away. The green flag drops Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. at the one mile over track in Sault Ste. Marie. The lack of snow and cold the past several weeks may have put doubts in some fan’s minds if the race would even be held this year, but I-500 race officials say not to worry. While the snow is nice to have, to build up the banks around the track, it is the cold that is needed to make the ice for the track.
Meet one of the strongest fourteen-year-olds in the state of Michigan, Ethan Reed
LUDINGTON - Ludington High School freshman Ethan Reed is one of the strongest fourteen-year-olds in the state. He has competed in multiple different powerlifting competitions around the state and is currently tied for the heaviest deadlift in 13-15 age group in the state in the United States Powerlifting Coalition. Reed also has a DOTS score 311.61 which is the highest of any 14-year-old in the state. The DOTS score is what is used to calculate the overall winner of a powerlifting meet, it is simply a ratio between a lifter’s body weight and the weight they’re lifting, the DOTS score allows us to compare a lifters’ strength relative to their body weight. - SoCalpowerlifting.net Reed says that powerlifting has become a huge part of his life now. “I love it very much. And even though it gets on my nerves, powerlifting, I can’t live without it,” said Reed. “So, deadlifting is my main lift. It’s like the one I’m known for. 445 (pounds) at 165 (pounds).” Essentially deadlifting almost three times his own body weight.

Cadillac edges McBain in defensive battle of unbeaten teams
CADILLAC - In a defensive battle that lived up to the hype as a battle between two of the toughest teams in northern Michigan, the Cadillac Vikings earned a hard-fought 36-33 non-conference victory over McBain on Monday night. “It’s a big boy basketball game,” Cadillac head coach Ryan Benzenberg said after the game. “Definitely the most physical, size-wise, and the way they play. They mirror us a lot. I have so much respect for Coach Koopman. We kind of model our defense the way he does it, really physical, and I’m just happy for our kids to come out on top.” In a back-and-forth first quarter, both teams held the lead at various points, with the Vikings taking a 13-11 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The defenses really buckled down in the second quarter, as both teams were limited to six points apiece, allowing Cadillac to hold a 19-17 halftime advantage.
Michigan makes statement in championship win over Washington
Washington tried to close the gap in the second half, but Michigan expanded the lead they established in the first half, winning the National Championship 34-13. They finish the season undefeated, 15-0. Michigan quickly pulled ahead, with Washington working to close the lead as the Wolverines head into halftime 17-10 against the Huskies. Washington plays Michigan in the College Football Playoff championship game on Monday, with the Huskies looking for their first national title since 1991 and the Wolverines going for their first since 1997. Both teams are in their first CFP title game. It will be only the third time that a pair of 14-0 teams have met. The Huskies have won 21 straight games, including each of the last 10 by 10 points or less. The Wolverines lost in the CFP semifinals the last two years and are the first Big Ten team since Ohio State in 2015 to reach the final.
Fifteen local teams earn spots in first boys basketball rankings of season
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has posted their first boys basketball rankings for the 2023-2024 season. The Rankings are based on the association’s “Michigan Power Ratings” formula, which is also used to determine seeding for the district playoff brackets later this year. Lions lose record-breaking rookie Sam LaPorta to knee injury in 30-20 win over Vikings
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell was determined to close the regular season with a win, taking the risk of getting players hurt in hopes of moving from the No. 3 to the No. 2 seed in the NFC and potentially hosting two or more playoff games. Detroit won a franchise record-tying 12th game, beating Minnesota, but lost standout rookie tight end Sam LaPorta to a potentially serious knee injury. LaPorta had a 2-yard touchdown catch midway through the first quarter and later limped off the field with a knee injury as the Lions went on to beat the Vikings 30-20 on Sunday. It was an ominous development for the NFC champions a week before the postseason. “You’re either all in or all out,” Campbell said.
Gladwin beats Bishop Foley for 7th win of the year
GLADWIN - The Gladwin Flying G’s got their 7th win of the season beating Bishop Foley 7-2 in hockey action Saturday afternoon. Gladwin led 3-0 after the first period, and with two goals from Hunter Simpson during the game the Flying G’s cruised to victory. Gladwin is now 7-1-1 on the year and will take on Cadillac in their next game.
