Gladwin suffers tough setback against Bay City John Glenn
GLADWIN - The Gladwin Flying G’s battled hard, but could not pull out a non-conference victory on Wednesday evening, falling to Bay City John Glenn 61-57. Gladwin played tough defense in the first half, holding the Bobcats standout big man Sean Wesolek to no first half field goals. Even still, the Bobcats led 31-30 at the half. They would stretch that to a 45-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Meech Ward led John Glenn with 20 points. Wesolek added 15.
Cadillac blanks Gaylord for first Big North win
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings scored their first Big North Conference win of the season, topping visiting Gaylord 4-0 on Wednesday night. Gabe Outman scored twice and added an assist for the Vikings. Keanan Foster tallied a goal and an assist. Blake Seelye recorded the other Viking goal. Cadillac also got assists from Kadin Hawkins (2), Mitchell House, Cadyn Rossell, Zachary Beckhardt and Devin Garner. The Vikings out-shot the Blue Devils 51-13 in the contest. Nicholas Brandsma earned the shutout victory in net for Cadillac. Finn Kelly stopped 47 of 51 shots for Gaylord.
Lake City comes from behind to beat Elk Rapids
LAKE CITY - The Lake City Trojans hosted the Elk Rapids Elks in a tightly contested matchup on Wednesday night, with the Trojans getting the 44-40 win. The Trojans trailed at the end of the first quarter but tied things up going into the half and were able to get the win. The Trojans were led by MacKenzie Bisballe with 25 points, and Alison Bisballe chipped in 10. For the Elks, Kendall Standfest had 15 points and Morgan Bergquist had 11. Lake City now moves to 3-2 and they’ll host Morley Stanwood after the holiday, the Elks fall to 5-1, and they’ll take on Escanaba after the holiday.
‘A dream come true’ - Gaylord Linebacker Brady Pretzlaff signs to play football at Michigan State
GAYLORD — Gaylord standout linebacker Brady Pretzlaff will be heading to East Lansing to play football for the Michigan State Spartans after signing his national letter of intent Wednesday. Pretzlaff was committed to Minnesota before decommitting last week and signing to play for the Spartans. In his past two seasons with the Blue Devils, he totaled 241 tackles (31 for loss), 13 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. Michigan State hired former Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi earlier this month, and Pretzlaff said that was a big part of the reason why he chose to be a Spartan. “I had a great relationship with him (Coach Rossi) And I think we’re gonna be able to do great things in Michigan State So that’s really what it boiled down to.” Pretzlaff said.
Benzie Central’s record-setting cross country runner, Hunter Jones, has jersey retired
BENZONIA - On Tuesday night, prior to the boys basketball game against Buckley, the Huskies honored former cross country star and current Wake Forest runner Hunter Jones by retiring his jersey. Hunter Jones set numerous records for the Huskies in both track and cross country, including the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter races. He was an MHSAA state champion in every year at Benzie. Hunter Jones was named the Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2023, Adidas Indoor National Champion in the 5000 meter race in 2020, Nike Cross Country All-American in 2023, Nike Indoor National Champion in the 3200 meter race in 2023, and the Detroit Athletic Club Male Athlete of the Year in 2023, along with many other accomplishments. Jones told us he was honored to receive such special recognition from the school.
Second half offensive explosion powers Ferris State to victory
BIG RAPIDS - Trailing by eleven at halftime, the Ferris State Bulldogs put on an offensive show in the second half, scoring 64 points to come from behind to defeat visiting Cedarville University on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs shot an astounding 71.9% from the field in the second half, led by Ethan Erickson, who scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were able to limit the Yellowjackets to just 34.2% shooting in the second half. In addition to Erickson, four other Bulldogs got into double figures for the game. Amari Lee had 15 points to go with four steals and three assists. Dolapo Olayinka added 14 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots. Jimmy Scholler scored 13 points, and Reece Hazelton chipped in with 10 points and six boards.
Mancelona erases halftime deficit to defeat Pine River in overtime
LEROY - The Mancelona Ironmen erased a 22-point halftime deficit to force overtime, where they pulled off a 61-53 non-conference victory over Pine River on Tuesday. The Bucks held a 35-13 lead at halftime. The loss was the first of the season for the Bucks. Mancelona (5-1) travels to East Jordan on Thursday night, Dec. 21, while Pine River (6-1) will return to action after the first of the year, when they host Evart on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Traverse City Central hires Kristina Olsen as new girls varsity cross country coach
TRAVERSE CITY - Traverse City Central has promoted assistant coach Kristina Olsen to take over the Trojans’ girls varsity cross country program, a position recently vacated by long-time head coach Lisa Taylor. Olsen has been an assistant at T.C. Central for the past seven seasons. “I am honored and excited to join the Traverse City Central Trojans as the Girls Head Cross Country Coach,” stated Olsen in a news release to 9&10 News. “This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the program’s rich history and to work with these student-athletes. I am eager to be part of a culture of teamwork, growth, and excellence.” Olsen was an all-state runner in cross country and track & field at Jackson High School. She went on to run collegiately at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Michigan’s Blake Corum named one of 3 recipients of Comeback Player of the Year
Virginia running back Mike Hollins, who survived a shooting that left three of his teammates dead and returned to play for the Cavaliers less than a year later, is one of three recipients of college football’s Comeback Player of the Year Award announced Monday. Michigan running back Blake Corum, who came back from a major knee injury to lead the top-ranked Wolverines in rushing and touchdowns, and Holy Cross linebacker Jacob Dobbs, who returned from a devastating arm injury to win conference defensive player of the year, are the other comeback players of the year for 2023. The Comeback Player of the Year Award is voted on by AP Top 25 voters and sports information directors from around the country. The players will honored at the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 in Glendale, Arizona.
