QB Aidan Chiles following coach Jonathan Smith to Michigan State
Former Oregon State quarterback Aidan Chiles announced Thursday he is following coach Jonathan Smith to Michigan State as a transfer. Chiles hade his commitment to Michigan State public in a social media post. He played in nine games this season as a freshman backup to DJ Uiagalelei. The former four-star recruit from California threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns and ran for three scores, getting steady work as a change-of-pace player for the 21st-ranked Beavers (8-4). Smith left Oregon State to become the head coach at Michigan State on Nov. 25.

MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan’s Alina Anderson will be finding herself on the court practically all-year long. Shortly after the Chippewas volleyball season wrapped, Anderson decided she would be joining the women’s basketball squad, just a few weeks into their 2023-24 season. “It was kind of a hard transition, mentally, it was a lot to think about. And to think that when volleyball starts up I’m going to be doing both. But I knew that this was something that I love,” Anderson said. The offer to join the women’s basketball team came at the perfect time.
Marion girls’ basketball beats Walkerville in home opener
MARION - The Marion Eagles girls basketball team beat the Walkerville Wildcats 41-21 in their home opener on Tuesday night. Madison Bell had a game high 14 points, with Jacelyn Moggo and Mara Joly both adding 8 points. For Walkerville, Maria Rodriguez led the team with 10 points. Marion moves to 2-1 on the year and they’ll take on Pentwater in their next game, Walkerville falls to 1-3 and they’ll take on Baldwin in their next game.
Clare gets first win of girls basketball season, beating Shepherd
CLARE - The Clare Pioneers girls basketball team got their first win of the season Tuesday evening, beating the Shepherd Blue Jays 48-35. The Pioneers Kendra Fouts led all scorers with 22 points, and Kyley Wyman added 10 for the Pioneers. For the Blue Jays Madi Gates scored a team high 8 points. The Pioneers move to 1-2 and will take on Gladwin in their next game, and Shepherd fall to 2-1, they will take on Sanford Meridian in their next game.
Michigan LB Junior Colson wins Lott IMPACT Trophy
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Linebacker Junior Colson of top-ranked Michigan won the Lott IMPACT Trophy on Sunday night as the college football player who makes an impact on and off the field. The Haiti-born Colson received the 20th annual award from Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Colson led the Wolverines with 71 tackles, 26 more than the next closest player, to go with a pair of tackles for a loss and as many quarterback hurries. He joins Jabrill Peppers in 2016 and Aidan Hutchinson in 2021 as Michigan players who have won. IMPACT stands for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
Manton girls win league opener over McBain
MANTON - The Manton girls basketball team capped an unbeaten opening week of their season with a 46-37 win over visiting McBain on Friday night. The Rangers scored the final five points of the first quarter to take a 13-8 lead after one quarter of play. Manton (2-0, 1-0 Highland) travels to Evart on Tuesday, Dec. 12. McBain (0-1, 0-1 Highland) will look to bounce back in their home opener on Monday night against Beal City.
Gaylord's girls basketball team moves to 2-0 after beating Grayling
GAYLORD - On Friday night the Gaylord Blue Devils took on the grayling Vikings in a Lake Michigan Conference versus Big North Conference Matchup with the Blue Devils winning it 51-33. Grayling had a four-point lead after the first quarter, but after that it was all Blue Devils. Gaylord’s Avery Parker led all scorers with 18 points and Karlee Pretzlaff added 10 points. For The Vikings Makayla Watkins led the way with 10 points. The Blue Devils are now 2-0 on the season and will take on Alma in their next matchup, while Grayling falls to 1-2 and will host Petoskey in their next game.
Elk Rapids moves to 2-0 with victory over Alpena
ELK RAPIDS - The Elk Rapids Elks erased an early deficit to earn a 42-22 non-conference win over visiting Alpena on Thursday evening. The Wildcats led 7-5 after a low-scoring first quarter, but the Elks’ offense got to work in the second quarter, as they out-scored Alpena 16-4 to take a 21-11 lead at halftime. In a funny coincidence, the Elks would also out-score the Wildcats 21-11 in the second half to provide the final margin. Kendall Standfest led the Elks with 16 points. Morgan Bergquist scored 12, and Hunter Shellenbarger chipped in with 10 for Elk Rapids.
