Evart tops Lake City for first conference win, second win overall
LAKE CITY - On Thursday evening the Lake City Trojans hosted the Evart Wildcats in a Highland Conference matchup, with the Wildcats coming out victorious 47-37. Lake City started out on fire from three-point land, going up 17-7, nailing five three pointers in the first quarter. The Wildcats used a big second half to get the win. Corbin Bisballe led the Trojans with 14 points, while Kaden McGinnis had 9. For Evart Noah Vanderlinde led all scorers with 22 points, while Dryson Derscheid and Aceyn Morgan both had 9 points. Evart move to 2-2 on the year and will take on Manton in their next matchup, for Lake City they fall to 1-2 and will take on Kalkaska in their next matchup.
Beal City stays undefeated after win against McBain Northern Michigan Christian
MCBAIN - The Beal City Aggies stayed undefeated on the season after beating McBain Northern Michigan Christian 57-39. The Aggies were led by Austin Small who had 18 points and for the Comets Ethan Bennett had 22 points. Beal City move to 3-0 will look to stay undefeated in their next matchup, against McBain. McBain Northern Michigan Christian fall to 1-2 and will take on Roscommon in their next matchup.
Roscommon’s Alexis Carper has 22-point game in win over Ogemaw Heights
OGEMAW HEIGHTS— Thursday, the Ogemaw Heights Falcons hosted the Roscommon Bucks. The Bucks were dominant all game, winning 52-24. Leading the Bucks’ charge was sophomore forward and center, Alexis Carper, who had 22 points on the night. Roscommon will be back in action Tuesday when they play host to McBain Northern Michigan Christian.
Walkerville wins first game of the season, beating Marion
MARION - On Wednesday evening in the Western Michigan ‘D’ League, the Walkerville Wildcats took on the Marion Eagles with the Wildcats squeaking out a 38-35 win. Both teams came into this one without a win. The Wildcats now move to 1-2 on the year, and they will take on Bear Lake in their next game, for Marion they fall to 0-3 and hope to get their first win against Pentwater.
Mason County Eastern races past Big Rapids Crossroads for first win of the season
CUSTER - The Mason County Eastern Cardinals raced out to a 19-0 lead after one quarter of play on their way to a decisive 52-9 win over visiting Big Rapids Crossroads on Wednesday evening. The win evens up the Cardinals’ record in the West Michigan “D” League at 1-1 (1-2 overall), while the Cougars fall to 0-2 in league play. Mason County Eastern will stay at home to host Brethren on Friday, Dec. 8. Big Rapids Crossroads will play their third straight road game to open the season on Friday night at Baldwin.
Ludington uses strong start to topple Traverse City St. Francis
LUDINGTON - The Ludington Orioles used their full-court press to take a quick 19-6 lead on visiting Traverse City St. Francis, en route to a 60-49 non-conference triumph on Wednesday night. The Orioles led 19-6 after the first quarter of play and built that to 26-10 early in the second quarter with their defense forcing a number of turnovers by the Gladiators in their first game action of the season. Max Ogden led St. Francis with 27 points in defeat. Ludington (2-1) opens up West Michigan Conference play at home on Friday night against Fremont. Traverse City St. Francis (0-1) returns home for their Lake Michigan Conference opener against East Jordan on Friday night.
Traverse City West hockey tops Traverse City Central for the first time since 2018
TRAVERSE CITY— Wednesday, the Traverse City Central Trojans played home to the Traverse City West Titans. For the first time since January of 2018, the Titans would come out on top 2-1. TCW would get on the board in the first period with a power play goal made by Lincoln Seyferth assisted by Robert Councilor. The Titans would be outshot that period, 14-10. In the second, both teams would come up scoreless.

TC West and TC Central hockey teams compete to raise money for ‘Fill the Trailer’ fundraiser
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West and Traverse City Central hockey teams are on the ice Wednesday for what’s expected to be an exciting rivalry match-up. But the real winners will be students in need. Each year, both schools host a “fill the trailer” fundraiser where decorated trailers are place outside entrances to the school. Students are encouraged to drop in donations. The TCAPS Student Support Network, which helps students overcome obstacles outside school that impact their education. SSN says 40% of TCAPS families are eligible for free and reduced meals, and over 250 students are experiencing homelessness. Since Monday, both schools have been working to fill their trailers. Students, staff and parents all participate, with some teachers even putting bins in their classrooms for donations.

Traverse City West tips off season with win over Benzie Central
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City West Titans won a hard-fought defensive game in their season opener on Tuesday night, topping visiting Benzie Central 34-24. The Huskies held a slim 11-10 lead at halftime, but the Titans out-scored Benzie 13-7 in the third quarter to take the lead, and they then carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, where they started the frame on an 11-1 run to take control. Mikayla Thompson and Madyson Sebela led the Titans with seven points apiece. Benzie Central was paced by Kara Johnson with six points. Traverse City West (1-0) welcomes in Midlan for another non-conference matchup on Friday evening. Benzie Central (0-1) returns to action at home against Glen Lake on Thursday night.
Glen Lake opens up title defense with close win over St. Francis
MAPLE CITY - The defending Division Four State Champion Glen Lake Lakers battled back from early deficit to defeat Traverse City St. Francis in both teams’ season opening game on Tuesday, 36-32. The Lakers started the game off quickly, building a 7-3 lead in the first quarter before the Gladiators scored the final ten points of the quarter to take a 13-7 lead after eight minutes of play. Glen Lake (1-0) travels to Benzie Central for their first Northwest Conference contest on Thursday night. Traverse City St. Francis (0-1) will look to bounce back on the road at Charlevoix in a Lake Michigan Conference matchup on Thursday.
Cadillac boys take down Mount Pleasant in program’s third-straight win
MOUNT PLEASANT— The Mount Pleasant Oilers hosted the Cadillac Vikings on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. The Vikings would go home with the win on the night, 53-38, for their third-straight win this season, and to maintain their perfect record. They’ll look to go for four-straight next Tuesday on the road to Essexville Garber. As for the Oilers, they will wait just three days for their opportunity to bounce back against DeWitt on Friday at home.
Kingsley beats Kalkaska for first win of the season
KINGSLEY - The Kingsley Stags opened up their boys basketball season with a win over the Kalkaska Blazer on Tuesday night. The Stags led from the opening tip, and never looked back, Kingsley had a 34-18 lead at half and were able to get the win 58-35. The Stags had two players in double figures, Noah Scribner had a game high 14 points and Zack Middleton had 1. For the Blazers, Chase Banko had seven points to lead the team. Kingsley is now 1-0 on the season and they’ll take on Onekama in their next matchup, Kalkaska fall to 0-2 and they’ll play Elk Rapids in their next game.
Sault Ste. Marie beast Alpena for first win of the season
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devis beat the Alpena Wildcats 58-50 to get their first win of the season. The Blue Devils are now 1-2 on the season and they’ll take on Petoskey in their next matchup. For Alpena they’re now 0-3 and hope to get their first win of the season against Maple City Glen Lake.
Shepherd girls basketball squeaks by Beal City in season opener
SHEPHERD― The Shepherd girls basketball team hosted the Beal City Aggies in their season opener on Tuesday night. The teams were evenly matched, and the score represented that, as the BlueJays squeezed past the Aggies 42-40. Shepherd’s Katie Robinson helped lead her team to the win with the night’s high 18 points. The BlueJays will be back in action on Thursday against the Gladwin Flying G’s on the road.
Manton girls have successful home opener against Kingsley
MANTON— Monday, the Manton Rangers hosted the Kingsley Stags in the opening night of girls basketball for the 2023-24 season. Manton would go on to take the win at home 56-42. The Rangers will host again on Friday when the McBain Ramblers come to town. As for Kingsley, they’ll look to bounce back against Buckley on the road on Thursday.
Late surge propels Ellsworth to win over Harbor Light Christian
ELLSWORTH - Trailing by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Ellsworth Lancers rallied in a big way on Monday night, outscoring Harbor Light Christian 28-8 in the fourth quarter to earn a 60-54 victory. Patrick Puroll led the Lancers’ charge, scoring ten of his game-high 31 points in the final quarter. Evincio LaCount chipped in with 12 points, nine of them coming in the fourth quarter comeback, and Ben Strange added 10 points for Ellsworth. Landon Jakeway and David Chamberlin each scored 14 points for Harbor Light Christian, which held a slim 21-20 halftime lead, before expanding that advantage to 46-32 at the end of the third quarter. Ellsworth (1-3, 1-0 Northern Lakes Conference) hosts Mackinaw City in their next game on Thursday night. Harbor Light Christian (1-1, 0-1 NLC) returns home to take on Wolverine, also on Thursday night.
East Jordan scores narrow win over Central Lake
EAST JORDAN - In an entertaining game on Monday night, the East Jordan Red Devils earned their first victory of the young season with a 68-65 triumph over Central Lake. The teams would battle back and forth in an end-to-end first quarter, with the Trojans taking a 24-19 lead after eight minutes of play. East Jordan (1-1) travels to Traverse City St. Francis to tip-off their Lake Michigan Conference slate on Friday, Dec. 8. Central Lake (1-1) will look to bounce back when they host Mancelona on Wednesday night in the Trojans’ Ski Valley League opener.
