BIG RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids NorthPointe Mustangs beat the Elk Rapids in a regional final on Friday night in penalty kicks. The scored was tied 1-1 heading into PK’s when the Mustangs won in sudden death.
Petoskey beats Escanaba to advance to regional final
PETOSKEY - The Petoskey Northmen beat the Escanaba Eskymos 3-0 on Thursday evening in the regional semifinal. This game was a pitching dual, but the Northemn were able to get one run in the 3rd and two in the bottom of the 7th to secure the win. Petoskey advances to play Saginaw Swan Valley in the regional final on Saturday.
Rudyard advances to title game on Saturday with 6-4 win against Harbor Springs
In regional semi-final baseball action, the Rudyard Bulldogs hosted the Harbor Springs Rams. The winner plays Saturday in Harbor Springs against Norway for the regional crown. There was a 30-minute delay start to the game due to rain just before gametime, but the crews got the field in great shape. Bottom of two, one out with bulldog runners on second and third. Eli Sprague hard ground ball through shortstop to left field, Dalton Savoie gets waved home by Coach Mitchell - a close play at home but he’s safe.
DNR euthanizes 31,000 salmon infected with bacterial kidney disease
UPDATE 6/4/24 6:00 p.m. HARRIETTA — The Michigan DNR was forced to kill thousands of Atlantic salmon after they were diagnosed with a bacterial kidney disease. More than 31,000 fish had to be euthanized at the Harrietta State Fish Hatchery. The disease was discovered in early April during a routine inspection, but after a 28-day round of antibiotics the fish didn’t recover and signs of disease were still present. The DNR said it was a tough decision, but clearly the right thing to do.
Rudyard wins titles in both baseball and softball
In Division 4 District action in Rudyard on Friday, the Bulldogs boys baseball team battled the Brimley Bays for the title. Earlier in the day, Rudyard beat Mackinaw City 9-4 and Brimley had no problem with Bark River Harris, 10-0. In the top of the third, Rudyard was at bat with a 5-0 lead. Dalton Savoie lined a shot to right field for a single. Eventually the Bulldogs have runners at second and third. Cam Peterson flies to Cooper Jones in center field. He makes the spectacular catch, but Peterson still earns the RBI.
Pistons part ways with Troy Weaver to clear way for Trajan Langdon to lead franchise, AP source says
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons are parting ways with general manager Troy Weaver in a retooled front office led by Trajan Langdon, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Friday because the moves had not been announced. Detroit has had the NBA’s worst record the past two seasons and won just 23% of its games over four years with Weaver in charge of basketball operations. Langdon was hired by the New Orleans Pelicans as general manager in 2019 and they improved under him in each of the past five years, winning 49 games last season to trail the win total of only one team in franchise history.
Elk Rapids win district title as Sierra Boilore scores 4 goals
ELK RAPIDS - The Elk Rapids Elks won their third straight district title with a 5-1 win over the Leland Comets on Thursday night. Sierra Boilore scored two goals in the first half giving the elks the 2-0 lead. In the 2nd half Boilore would score less than a minute in, and Leland would respond with a goal from Lillian Connor to make it 3-1. Boilore would go on to score her 4th goal of the game and Kendall Standfest would get the 5th as the Elks are headed back to regionals. Leland’s season comes to an end with a 16-3-2 record, the Elks will take on the winner of Tawas vs Midland Calvary Baptist on June 4th in Big Rapids.
Pit Spitters get home opener win behind Carson Fischer’s stellar outing
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Pit Spitters won their 2024 home opener over the Kokomo Jackrabbits 2-1. The Pit Spitters starting pitcher, Carson Fischer, pitched seven innings giving up one run on five hits striking out five batters. Brody Capps had an RBI for the Pit Spitters in the 5th and Micheal Tchavdarov scored the winning run for Traverse City in the bottom of the sixth. The Pit Spitters now move to 2-1 on the year and will take on Kokomo on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 A.M.
Josh Gibson becomes MLB career and season batting leader as Negro Leagues statistics incorporated
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Gibson became Major League Baseball’s career leader with a .372 batting average, surpassing Ty Cobb’s .367, when Negro Leagues records for more than 2,300 players were incorporated Tuesday after a three-year research project. Gibson’s .466 average for the 1943 Homestead Grays became the season standard, followed by Charlie “Chino” Smith’s .451 for the 1929 New York Lincoln Giants. They overtook the .440 by Hugh Duffy for the National League’s Boston team in 1894. Gibson also became the career leader in slugging percentage (.718) and OPS (1.177), moving ahead of Babe Ruth (.690 and 1.164). “This initiative is focused on ensuring that future generations of fans have access to the statistics and milestones of all those who made the Negro Leagues possible,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “Their accomplishments on the field will be a gateway to broader learning about this triumph in American history and the path that led to Jackie Robinson’s 1947 Dodger debut.”

KALKASKA - The Elk rapids Elks beat the Mancelona Ironmen 14-0 in five innings in Pre-District baseball Tuesday night. The Elks advance to the district semifinal against Charlevoix on Saturday, while Mancelona’s season comes to an end.
Bark River-Harris beats Pickford in Pre-District baseball
RUDYARD - The Bark River-Harris Broncos beat the Pickford Panthers 14-3 in six innings on Tuesday evening in Pre-District baseball action. The Broncos advance to the district semis where they will take on Brimley on Friday, while Pickford’s season comes to an end.
Tigers and Pirates rained out, will play doubleheader on Wednesday
DETROIT (AP) — The game between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates was postponed on Tuesday because of storms in the area. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader starting at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday. Left-hander Tarik Skubal (6-1, 2.25) and righty Jack Flaherty (1-4, 3.84) are expected to start the doubleheader for the Tigers, while right-hander Jared Jones (3-4, 3.05) and righty Paul Skenes (1-0, 2.25) will pitch for Pittsburgh. Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, will be making his fourth career start on his 22nd birthday.
Bill Walton, Hall of Fame player who became a star broadcaster, dies at 71
Bill Walton, who starred for John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins before becoming a Hall of Famer and one of the biggest stars in basketball broadcasting, died Monday, the league announced on behalf of his family. Walton, who had a prolonged fight with cancer, was 71. He was the NBA’s MVP in the 1977-78 season, a two-time champion as a player and a member of both the NBA’s 50th anniversary and 75th anniversary teams. That all followed a college career in which he was a two-time champion at UCLA and a three-time national player of the year. “Bill Walton,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “was truly one of a kind.”
Traverse City Pit Spitters hold annual media day
TRAVERSE CITY - On Friday afternoon the Traverse City Pit Spitters held their annual media day, as members of the media got their first chance to talk to members of the 2024 pit spitters squad. Most of the players that are returning are pitchers this year. Josh Rebandt is back for his sixth year in a row as field manager and he’s excited to be back in TC for another summer. “What’s a better spot to be than here in Traverse City in the summertime.” Said Rebandt Todd Reid is also back for his sixth consecutive season as the bench coach and he’s ready to prepare the new group for the Northwoods League.
McBain NMC’s Jada VanNoord has over 150 career goals and she’s not done yet
MCBAIN - McBain Northern Michigan Christian senior Jada VanNoord has scored over 150 goals in her four-year career and with playoffs still on the horizon she’s not done yet. Jada VanNoord and her mom Jen VanNoord have helped the Comets achieve four straight seasons with fourteen or more wins. Jada currently sits in the top ten all time in MHSAA girls’ soccer history for goals in a career and has the most goals in NMC history. “So, it’s honestly really surreal. I don’t even think it’s like fully sunk in that I have scored over 150 goals and like that record and everything, but it’s been super fun, super fun to just be able to do what I love and still break a record like that is insane.” Said Jada VanNoord. “When I was a freshman, you would have told me I was going to break that record. I would be like, no way, that’s crazy. Like, you don’t know what you’re talking about, but now we’re here and it’s super cool.” The mother daughter duo has also been a big reason for the Comets success in recent years.
TC United beats Petoskey to advance to regional final
TRAVERSE CITY - TC United beat the Petoskey Northmen co-op lacrosse team 11-10 in the regional semifinal Thursday night. TC United were led by senior, Caleb Lewandowski, who to our knowledge had nine goals including the game winner with fifteen seconds to go. TC United’s head coach, Liberty Provost had high praise for Lewandowski after the game. “It was a wild one, you never know what you’re going to get up here as far as like, calls and our play. You know what I mean. We’re never sure, some days come out play great some days and come out and kick it around a little bit. I felt like today was kind of a kick it around day, but Leb is consistent, Caleb is always ready to rock man and I mean, you just can’t make up for that. Like without him, we get beat by five goals today.” Said Provost. The man of the hour, Caleb Lewandowski knew that it was going to be a tough outing, but they were able to get it done.
Clare tops Reed City in the first round of Districts
REED CITY - The Clare Pioneers beat the Reed City Coyotes 3-2 in the opening round of playoffs in District 35. The Pioneers got a first half hattrick from Ivy Russell and were able to hold on and get the win. Clare will take on Alma in the next round of Districts, while Reed City’s season comes to an end.
Big Rapids Crossroads beats Benzie Central in first round of Districts
BIG RAPIDS - The Crossroads Charter Academy Cougars beat the Benzie Central Huskies 9-3 in the first round of the playoffs in district 51. The Cougars now advance and take on the winner of Shelby vs Brethren. Benzie’s season will come to an end.
