St. Ignace sweeps past Pickford
SAINT IGNACE - The St. Ignace Saints scored a three-set victory over visiting Pickford on Tuesday night. The Saints have one last regular season contest on the schedule, at home against Harbor Springs on Thursday night before getting ready for district play. The Panthers closed out their regular season, and now prepare to meet Rudyard in a district-opening match on Monday, Oct. 31.
Leland and Harbor Springs setup showdown for regional title with Tuesday victories
CLARE - The Leland Comets and Harbor Springs Rams scored regional semifinal victories on Tuesday to setup an all-local regional final on Thursday night in Clare. In the first game of the evening on Tuesday, the Comets jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead on their way to a commanding 5-0 triumph over Saginaw Valley Lutheran. Max Waldrup scored three goals for the Comets, and Ignacio Creamer contributed the other two goals. In the nightcap, Harbor Springs took the early lead on a goal by Henry Juneau, but Roscommon responded with a rebound tally by Ben Hamina to send the game into the half tied 1-1. The Rams were able to notch the game-winning goal to take the match, 2-1. Roscommon sees their season come to a close with an 11-7-3 record.
Traverse City West soccer eliminated in overtime in regionals
GRAND RAPIDS - The Traverse City West Titans could not hold an early 1-0 lead, falling to ninth-ranked Rockford in overtime in a division one regional semifinal game on Tuesday night. The Rams would score deep into the second half to force overtime, and then would score again late in the second half of overtime to knock the fourth-ranked Titans out of the state tournament. Kallen Ray scored the lone Traverse City West goal just over ten minutes into the first half to give the Titans a 1-0 lead that they would hold through the halftime break. Traverse City West finishes their season with an 18-2-1 overall record, along with a Big North Conference championship and a district title.
Boyne City tunes up for postseason with win over Sault Ste. Marie
SAULT SAINTE MARIE - The Boyne City Ramblers kicked off a busy final week of the regular season with a non-conference road victory over Sault Ste. Marie on Monday night. The Ramblers took the first set 25-20 en route to a 3-1 match win over the Blue Devils. Boyne City (23-4) travels to Cedarville on Thursday for a tri-meet versus the Islanders and Pickford. They then host their own invitational this weekend before beginning district play next week. Sault Ste. Marie travels to take on Negaunee in their opening match of districts on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Ferris State volleyball stays unbeaten in GLIAC play, sweeps LSSU
BIG RAPIDS - The 16th-ranked Ferris State volleyball team improved to 12-0 in GLIAC play by sweeping a matinee home match from Lake Superior State on Monday. The Bulldogs won with scores of 25-19 in the first, 25-18 in the second, and 25-21 to complete the sweep. Ferris State also swept the Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie just over three weeks ago. Ferris State was coming off an emotional weekend, where they came from behind to defeat league rival Grand Valley State to stay unbeaten atop the GLIAC standings. On Monday, Claire Nowicki paced a balanced Bulldog attack, racking up nine kills. Emma Bleecher and Hannah Tecumseh each chipped in with seven kills apiece.

Michigan State suspends employee involved with allowing Hitler’s image to be shown on videoboards
UPDATE 10/22/23 9:01 p.m. EAST LANSING (AP) — Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller said he has suspended an employee involved in allowing Adolf Hitler’s image to be shown on videoboards before playing No. 2 Michigan. The employee, who was not named, will be paid pending an investigation that will help to determine potential action in the future. Haller said no one in the department viewed the entire video, exposing a failure in its process. “Antisemitism must be denounced,” Haller said in a statement Sunday Night. “The image displayed prior to Saturday night’s game is not representative of who we are and the culture we embody. Nevertheless, we must own our failures and accept responsibility.

BIG RAPIDS 55, ALMA 13 The Big Rapids Cardinals burnished their postseason resume, wrapping up the regular season with an 8-1 record after a 55-13 triumph over visiting Alma on Friday night. The Cardinals held a 27-13 lead at the half, and exploded for 28 points in the third quarter to break the game open. Ferris State look to bounce back from GVSU loss, take on Michigan Tech on Saturday
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after their tough loss to Grand Valley State last weekend, they’ll be on the road this weekend, taking on the Michigan Tech Huskies in Houghton. Ferris fell 49-28 to the Lakers after going down 35-0 early in the first half, but the Bulldogs responded with 28 unanswered points, before giving up two touchdowns later in the contest. Michigan suspends staffer after sign-stealing allegations come to light
No. 2 Michigan announced Friday that it has suspended a low-level football program employee a day after disclosing it is under NCAA investigation for allegedly stealing the play-calling signals used by Wolverines opponents. Athletic director Warde Manuel issued a one-sentence statement saying that Connor Stalions had been suspended with pay pending the conclusion of the NCAA investigation. Stalions had not been previously identified by the school but was named in an ESPN report alleging he is a key figure in the probe. The Wolverines (7-0), who started their season with coach Jim Harbaugh serving a university-imposed three-game suspension for a still unresolved NCAA infractions case, play at Michigan State on Saturday. Harbaugh on Thursday denied any knowledge or involvement in plotting to steal signs. “I do not have any knowledge or information regarding the University of Michigan football program illegally stealing signals, nor have I directed any staff member or others to participate in an off-campus scouting assignment,” Harbaugh said. “I have no awareness of anyone on our staff having done that or having directed that action.”
Gladwin falls to Freeland to District Final
GLADWIN - The Gladwin Flying G’s fell to the Freeland Falcons in the district final 4-3. It was a 4-1 game late in the second half, but the Flying G’s got two quick goals to make the last eight minutes a tight and tense affair. Freeland was ultimately able to secure the win. Isaac Wheeler had a goal and Caleb Palmreuter had two for the Flying G’s, while Treyton Siegert notched two assists. Gladwin’s season ends with an 18-2-0 record.
Traverse City West claims fifth straight district title with win over Midland Dow
TRAVERSE CITY - Traverse City West got a late goal from Aidan Orth to break a 1-1 tie and send the Titans to their fifth consecutive district championship in a 2-1 victory over Midland Dow on Thursday night. Orth scored both goals for the Titans, having notched his first marker on a penalty kick in the first half. His game-winner came with just 3:48 left in regulation. Midland Dow tied the match up early in the second half, setting the stage for Orth’s late-game heroics. “Their starting keeper, he was really good, all through his high school career. We were prepared for that, and they were prepared for us,” Orth said after the match. “We just knew with the conditions, it was going to be a battle out there, and that’s what it was the whole 80 minutes.”
Sault Ste. Marie sweeps Newberry in Straits Area play
SAULT SAINTE MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils finished off an unbeaten regular season run through the Straits Area Conference by toppling Newberry on Thursday night in three sets. Although the match was a sweep, the Indians challenged the Blue Devils, pushing them in the first and third sets. Sault Ste. Marie took the first set, 26-24, carried that momentum into the second for a 25-17 decision, and closed out the match with a hard-fought 25-23 win in the third set. The Blue Devils and Indians now prepare for this weekend’s Straits Area Conference Tournament, hosted by Rudyard.
CMU men’s basketball feels confident heading into 2023-24 season with revamped roster
MOUNT PLEASANT― The Central Michigan men’s basketball team is feeling good this preseason. According to head coach Tony Barbee in his Thursday press conference, the team is the healthiest they’ve ever been this far along in the preseason. Not only is this squad healthy, but they’re tall and athletic. The Chippewas roll into their third season under Barbee with a lot of newcomers. Six true freshmen joined the squad alongside six transfers.
‘10/10 coaching staff’: CMU women’s basketball ready to rally under new personnel
MOUNT PLEASANT— The Central Michigan women’s basketball program is ready for a fresh start. Last season, they won just six games, for a 6-23 overall record, and a 4-14 conference record. But this isn’t last season. Now, the Chippewas have a new head coach in WNBA 9th overall draft pick and Michigan State women’s basketball legend, Kristin Haynie. Haynie has also managed to recruit new staffers for the program, retaining just one in team-favorite Micaela Kelly aka “Twin.” “10-out-of-10 staff,” Central Michigan forward Nadége Jean exclaimed in Thursday’s press conference. “They care about us as people outside of the court... it’s the little things like that that matter to me.”
NCAA investigates sign stealing by University of Michigan football team
No. 2 Michigan said Thursday it has been notified by the NCAA that the football program is being investigated for allegedly stealing signs. “The university is fully cooperating with the Big Ten and NCAA. The investigation is ongoing and will not impact Saturday’s game,” the university said in a statement. “At the University of Michigan, we are committed to the highest ethical and integrity standards for all members of our community.” The Wolverines (7-0) play at Michigan State on Saturday. The Big Ten also announced the investigation, but provided no further details, only to say that it had notified Michigan’s upcoming opponents about the investigation.
Suttons Bay defeats McBain NMC, sets up district final showdown with Leland
MC BAIN - The Suttons Bay Norsemen setup a rivalry showdown for a district title on Friday with a hard-fought 1-0 win over McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Wednesday night. Finn Mankowski scored the lone goal of the game on a quickly taken free kick midway through the first half that bent inside the near post for the goal. Other than that, the Norsemen had plenty of opportunities, but were unable to get any other shots by Comets’ freshman keeper Blair DeZeeuw. “I think in the second half in particular we settled down, and created some great opportunities, but just had a hard time finishing tonight,” Suttons Bay head coach Len Mankowski said after the match.
Pit Spitters’ Holm named Northwoods League Executive of the Year
TRAVERSE CITY - The Northwoods League named Traverse City Pit Spitters’ General Manager Jacqueline Holm their Executive of the Year for 2023 at their recent fall meetings in Minnesota. Holm took over the reins of the team for the 2023 season, helping the team set attendance records both for regular season games and for the Great Lakes All-Star Game, which the Pit Spitters hosted in late July. Traverse City earned its fifth playoff berth in as many seasons as a franchise in the Northwoods League, falling to the eventual league champion Green Bay Rockers in the Great Lakes Championship...
