Pittsburgh and the Steelers will be hosting the 2026 NFL draft
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The NFL has awarded the 2026 draft to Pittsburgh with the Steelers ready to tap Pennsylvania’s deep football tradition trying to meet the new standard for host cities. League officials announced the decision Wednesday as part of the NFL spring meetings. Owners chose Pittsburgh after reviewing the bid along with the advisory committee. The three-day draft will be held at Point State Park and the Steelers’ home at Acrisure Stadium. The NFL set a record with more than 775,000 fans attending the 2024 draft in April in Detroit, and Green Bay will be hosting the 2025 draft at Lambeau Field on April 24-26. Pittsburgh owner Art Rooney II said Detroit and Kansas City helped set a very high bar for hosting one of the NFL’s premier events. He said the Steelers look forward to following that tradition tapping into the roots of pro football in a state that sent the likes of Mike Ditka, Dan Marino and Joe Montana to the NFL.
Rudyard sweeps Pickford in baseball and softball doubleheader
RUDYARD - The Rudyard Bulldogs took on the Pickford Panthers in both baseball and softball on Tuesday evening. In baseball Rudyard beat Pickford 4-0 in game one and 3-2 in game two, in softball, Rudyard beat Pickford 13-7 in game one and 11-7 in game two.
Reed City sweep softball doubleheader against White Cloud
REED CITY - The Reed City Coyotes beat the White Cloud Indians in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday evening. Reed City came from behind to win the first game 7-2, and Reed City went on to win the second game 13-5.
Buckley tops Cadillac Heritage Christian
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Heritage Christian Patriots hosted the Buckley Bears on the Patriots senior day. The Bears were able to get the win 4-1 in a game that was shortened due to thunderstorms. Kaylee Swanson had two first half goals for Buckley. Lily Bigger scored the lone goal of the game for the Patriots.
Sault Ste. Marie softball and baseball sweep doubleheaders against Newberry
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils softball and baseball teams both swept doubleheaders against the Newberry Indians on Monday evening. The Blue Devil softball team won game one 16-1 and game two 19-0, the baseball team beat Newberry 15-1 and 19-0.
Big Rapids wins CSAA Championship, beating Tri-County
BIG RAPIDS - The Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Howard City Tri-County Vikings 5-1 in the Central State Activities Association Championship Friday night. The Cardinals went up 2-1 after the first half and score three more in the second as they captured the title. Kayleigh Knopf had a hattrick in this one, and she knew they had to win this game. “I think we did really good as a team, and really trying hard for this game and putting our all into it,” Knopf said. Big Rapids head coach, Curt Ray was happy with the fight that his team showed.
Deal secured, Jared Goff now wants a Super Bowl title
ALLEN PARK (AP) — After getting long-term security with a $212 million contract extension, Lions quarterback Jared Goff said he has one more thing to accomplish with Detroit. Win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. A few minutes after signing the four-year deal on Thursday that will take him through the 2028 season, the Lions quarterback told reporters he was focused on making sure he had a home. “It was mostly security,” he said. “You can go back and forth on the numbers, but that wasn’t the thing I was ever extremely concerned about. It was the security and the no-trade clause and all that stuff, knowing all that was in there. Feeling secure and then knowing I can now put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”
Traverse City West hold ribbon cutting for new facilities
TRAVERSE CITY - Traverse City West high school held a ribbon cutting on Thursday afternoon for their new athletic fields. The soccer, softball and baseball teams couldn’t play home games for the past year, but with the new fields that is a thing of the past. TC West has also built a new concession stand and locker room area for officials. The school’s athletic director, Jason Carmien was happy about the new opportunities for the students. “Our seniors are really happy that they get to spend their last year back at their home place. Coaches are happy because practices can take place every day and it’s really been a game changer for us to have an entrance with ticketing, concessions, bathroom. We have changing rooms for our umpires and referees. The upgrades have been tremendous, and we really want to thank everybody that had a hand in it. It’s been it’s been pretty awesome,” said Carmien.
Big Rapids beats Newaygo to advance to CSAA Championship
BIG RAPIDS - The Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Newaygo Lions 5-0 in the CSAA semifinal to advance to the CSAA Championship. The Cardinals led 2-0 after the first half and scored 3 goals in the second half. The Championship will be at 6 P.M. Friday at Big Rapids. Newaygo’s next game will be in the first round of districts.
Manton welcomes in Michigan State’s Abbey Kimball and Theryn Hallock for the day
MANTON - Michigan State women’s basketball players Abbey Kimball and Theryn Hallock made their way to Manton High School on Tuesday afternoon. The two Spartans talked to the students about what college athletics are like, as well as answered some questions that both students and teachers had for them. Kimball and Hallock then played a game of knockout against members of the Manton boys and girls basketball teams, as well as a game of horse with two members of the faculty. Two Manton students, Genna Alexander and Aubrey Hiller, very much enjoyed what the two collegiate athletes had to say. “It was kind of inspiring because they like they’re from college and I play basketball, so it’s really cool to see their perspective on things and how they got to the places they did,” said Alexander.
Elk Rapids’ Ayva Johnstone inks letter of intent to Ferris State
ELK RAPIDS - One of the best tennis players in the state of Michigan, Ayva Johnstone, signed her letter of intent to play tennis at Ferris State University for the next four years on Tuesday afternoon. Johnstone has qualified for states in all four years and has been named to the all-state squad in both her sophomore and junior year, (senior year is still happening). She has also been ranked first in Northern Michigan for the past two season, and is the 10th ranked girls player in the state according to Player Overview - Ayva Johnstone (tennisrecruiting.net). Johnstone is grateful for everything that Elk Rapids has given her, and she is excited for the next step in her journey. “It’s really special to me, I’ve been looking forward to this, I’m a little nervous, but I’m really excited, too. It’s been one of my dreams and one of my goals since I was a little kid to play college tennis. So, I’m super happy and I’m super blessed to be able to say I can play for another four years on a college team,” said Johnstone. She will be studying business in the professional tennis management program at Ferris State.
