Mason County Central records big WMC crossover win over Fremont
SCOTTVILLE - The Mason County Central Spartans girls used a big first quarter to open up a lead on their way to an impressive 59-50 West Michigan Conference crossover victory over Lakes Division-leading Fremont on Wednesday. The Spartans jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first eight minutes of play, expanding that lead to 38-25 at the half. The Packers closed the gap in the third quarter, pulling within five points late before Mallory Miller hit a three just before the third quarter buzzer to give the Spartans a 50-42 edge heading into the final frame. Miller led Mason County Central with an 18-point night. Eva Hradel added 13 points, and Riley Mast chipped in with 10. Fremont’s Riley Chase led all scorers with 19 points on the night. Mason County Central (16-4) hosts Hesperia on Friday night. Fremont (15-4) will return home to face Manistee on Friday night.
Lake City tops Hart to run winning streak to 18
HART - The Lake City Trojans earned a big non-conference win on Wednesday night, going on the road to defeat Hart 49-36 to extend their winning streak to 18 games. In a matchup of two of the top teams in Division Three, the Trojans’ defense was stifling early on, as they held the Pirates to just two points in the first quarter. Lake City (18-2) hosts Missaukee County rival McBain in their final game of the regular season on Friday, Feb. 23. Hart (14-5) will look to bounce back at home on Friday night, when they take on Holton.
McBain remains undefeated in the Highland Conference, beating Evart
EVART - The McBain Ramblers beat the Evart Wildcats 64-23 in Highland Conference action Wednesday night. The Ramblers were led by Evan Haverkamp, he had a game-high 14 points. McBain moves to 19-2 on the season, Evart falls to 4-14.
Back-to-Back, Big Rapids beats Reed City to win 2nd straight CSAA Tournament Championship
REED CITY - The Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Reed City Coyotes 48-46 to capture the Central State Activities Association Championship for the 2nd straight year. It was a close game all the way through, but the Cardinals were able to pull it out in the end. Big Rapids’ Gabe Njenga had a game-high 16 points, and for Reed City Landen Jackson had 13. Big Rapids will take on Manistee in the first round of districts, while Reed City will take on the winner of Hart and Mason County Central, these two teams could meet in the district title game.
Petoskey keeps season alive in triple overtime thriller against Cadillac
CADILLAC— The Petoskey Northmen took on Cadillac on Wednesday night in a regional semifinal. Petoskey came out on top 5-4 in 3OT. With the win, the Northmen advance to Wednesday’s regional final against the winner of Thursday’s game between Cheboygan and the Traverse City Bay Reps. The solo scorer in the first period was Petoskey’s Chase LaFaive. Petoskey nabbed two goals in the second period from Madden Pateman and Thomas Guiney. Cadillac had three in the second, scored by Gabe Outman, Bjorn Tracy, and Cadyn Rossell to tie things 3-3 at the end of the period.
Mancelona claims Ski Valley co-championship with win over Bellaire
BELLAIRE - In another hard-fought battle between the two top teams in the Ski Valley Conference, the Mancelona Ironmen used a big third quarter to turn the tide and earn a 54-52 victory over Bellaire on Tuesday night. The win moved Mancelona into a tie with the Eagles for first place in the Ski Valley Conference, although the Ironmen won both meetings this season, topping the Eagles by a single point back in mid-January. Bellaire jumped out to a 10-point lead in first quarter, 24-14, and they took a 33-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Ironmen carried the momentum from their second quarter surge to outscore the Eagles 17-8 in the third quarter and take a 48-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Aiden Dixon led the way for the Ironmen with a 15-point night. Jackson Bennett and Tavin Morgan each chipped in with 11 points for Mancelona. Jayden Hanson was the standout on the night for Bellaire, scoring 23 points, with 20 of those points came in the first half.
Central Lake scores big while honoring past scoring leaders
CENTRAL LAKE - On a night when they unveiled a new display in the gym honoring 1,000+ point scorers in school history, the Central Lake Trojans’ boys basketball team exploded for 80 points in topping Pellston by an 80-31 count. The Trojans overcame an early sluggish start, with the Hornets jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead in the first quarter. Central Lake led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and did not look back from there. The two most recent additions to the 1,000-point club at Central Lake led the way for the Trojans on Tuesday night....
Cheboygan advances to Regional Semifinal with win over Gaylord
CADILLAC― The Cheboygan Chiefs hosted the Gaylord Blue Devils in a pre-regional contest on Tuesday night. Cheboygan would be the winner of the contest 4-1, and advance to see the No. 5 Traverse City Bay Reps in Thursday’s regional semifinal. Both teams would record shutouts in the first period. The second period would be tied 1-1 with goals from Cheboygan’s Broden Powell and Gaylord’s Bryton Thaxton. The Chiefs would pull away in the third, scoring three more times. 2/3 goals were scored by captain Warren Farver. The final goal on the night was an empty netter recorded by Jack Lane.
McBain gets first non-conference win of the year, beating Reed City
McBAIN - The McBain Ramblers beat the Reed City Coyotes on Tuesday night 40-36, as the Ramblers earned their first non-conference win of the year. The Ramblers trailed early in the game, but were able to come back in the 2nd half. McBain now moves to 10-9 on the season with just two games remaining, Reed City falls to 11-8, they have just one regular season game left.
Cadillac wins nailbiter against Big Rapids
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings won a tight game 41-39 against the Big Rapids Cardinals. With the game coming down to the very last possession. Kaleigh Swiger led the Vikings with 14, Mackenzie Johns chipped with 11. For Big Rapids, Hadley Fox had 16. Cadillac moves to 11-8 on the year, while Big Rapids falls to 10-8.
Frankfort uses quick start to score non-conference win over Baldwin
FRANKFORT - The Frankfort Panthers used a 16-2 first half run to open up a lead that they would not relinquish, as they scored an impressive 66-58 non-conference win over visiting Baldwin on Monday. In a battle of the Panthers, Baldwin started the game with a 10-4 lead, but from that point on, Frankfort ran off a 16-2 run spanning the remainder of the first quarter and part of the second quarter to build a 20-12 lead. Frankfort would expand that lead to 33-19 at halftime. Bryce Plesha led the way for Frankfort with 20 points. Tristin Griffin chipped in with 18 points for Frankfort, and Carter Kerby added 16. For Baldwin, Pierre Johnson scored a team-high 15 points, with S.J. Hossler and Louie Jackson each recording 14-point efforts.
Ludington holds Benzie Central at bay to earn road win
BENZONIA - The Ludington Orioles used stifling defense on Monday night to top Benzie Central on the road 38-19. The Orioles held the Huskies to just seven first half points, taking a 9-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Benzie Central would battle back in the third quarter, pulling within two points late in the quarter, but the Orioles were able to score two quick baskets to push the lead back out to seven (23-16) heading into the fourth quarter. Ludington (14-6) travels to Muskegon Orchard View on Wednesday evening. Benzie Central (9-9) is also in action on Wednesday night, paying a visit to Manistee.
Central Michigan gets big win over Western in Toilet Paper Toss Game
MT. PLEASANT - The Central Michigan Chippewas beat the Western Michigan Broncos 69-42 in the Toilet Paper Toss Game. It was a sellout crowd at McGuirk Arena as the Chippewas raced out to an early lead behind multiple three-pointers by Derrick Butler in the first half, he finished with a game-high 24 points. Central Michigan is now 15-10 on the season and 8-2 on their home floor.

BOYS BASKETBALL Traverse City West 59, Traverse City Central 53 Traverse City West completed the season sweep of their cross-town rivals from Traverse City Central, outlasting the Trojans 59-53 on Friday. The Titans won the first rivalry matchup by five points back in early January. Traverse City West (15-5, 7-2 Big North) travels to take on Benzie Central on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Traverse City Central (4-15, 3-6 BNC) is on the road at Midland Dow on the same night.
Northern Michigan semi-pro football team heads to Miami Sunshine Bowl this weekend
PETOSKEY—The Northern Michigan Panthers had a perfect 9-0 season in the Great Michigan Football Conference, taking home the Greater Midwest Football Conference trophy back in August. The league runs all summer long, with games May through August. “It’s kind of a grind,” head coach John Delis said. “These are guys who have families and games are pretty much every Saturday [of the summer] and we practice on Sundays.” The Conference win secured them a spot in this weekend’s coveted Sunshine Bowl in Miami, Florida.
Cadillac Heritage Christian boys and girls get wins over Grand Traverse Academy
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Heritage Christian Patriots got a pair of wins against the Grand Traverse Academy Mustangs Thursday night. The girls game came down to the wire with the Patriots getting the 46-43 win in overtime, Lovina Smith had 15 and Lily Bigger had 13 for the Patriots. The Patriots won the boys game 43-28 but trailed 16-6 after the first quarter and stormed back for the win. The Cadillac Heritage Christian girls team moved to 10-2 and the boys team to 3-7. Grand Traverse academy girls fell to 9-8 and the boys team to 2-17
Pentwater gets conference win over Mesick
MESICK - The Pentwater Falcons beat the Mesick Bulldogs in West Michigan ‘D’ League action Thursday night. Micheal Carlson had 19 points and Trey Johnson had 18 for the Falcons. Pentwater moves to 16-5 on the year while Mesick drops to 7-14.
Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart arrested for allegedly punching Suns’ Eubanks during pregame altercation
PHOENIX (AP) — Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart was arrested for assault Wednesday for punching Phoenix Suns center Drew Eubanks at the arena hours before the teams played. Phoenix police said Stewart was issued a citation and released. Stewart was already listed as out for the game because of a sprained left ankle. Eubanks had six points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes in the Suns’ 116-100 victory. Eubanks said before the game that the altercation happened as he was coming into the arena. He said an argument started and they were chest-to-chest before Stewart threw the punch. Security intervened and Eubanks said he was fine for the game, though police say he sustained a minor injury. “The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable,” the Suns said in a statement. “We unequivocally support Drew, and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”
Pine River beats Beal City in Highland Conference action
PINE RIVER - The Pine River Bucks won a close game 56-52 over the Beal City Aggies on Wednesday night. The Bucks started the game down 7-0 but came back to win the first quarter and eventually, the game. The Bucks improve to 6-11 on the year, while Beal City drop to 7-12.
