Gaylord beats Traverse City West in the Titans return to the ice
GAYLORD - The Traverse City West Titans traveled to Gaylord for their first game back since Friday night’s game against Cadillac was canceled mid-game due to an injury suffered by West sophomore Brady Lewis. Gaylord led 2-1 after the 2nd period and were able to hold on for a 3-2 win, their first this season in the Big North Conference. Gaylord is now 6-16 on the season, while Traverse City West is 10-12. West’s next game is scheduled for Friday, against TC Central, the team will decide Thursday if they will play the game.
Brethren beats Marion to stay unbeaten in conference play
MARION - The Brethren Bobcats beat the Marion Eagles in West Michigan ‘D’ League action Wednesday night. The Bobcats led from the opening tip and got the 62-21 win. Brethren is now 14-4 on the season and 12-0 in conference, while Marion drops to 7-8 on the season.
Mio beats Rogers City in conference action
MIO - The Mio Thunderbolts came from behind to beat the Rogers City Hurons 44-39. Mio had 3 players score in double figures, as Jamison Cooper had 14, Kostas Archo had 11, and Zeke Morris had 10. For Rogers City, Jae Wenzel had 12, Justin Romerl had 11, and Isaac Lalonde had 10. Mio improves to 8-11 on the season, while Rogers City drops to 6-12.
Cadillac hosts doubleheader against Reed City, splits games
CADILLAC— Cadillac hosted a double header on Tuesday night against the Reed City Coyotes. The girls played first, in a close 40-32 win for the Coyotes. Up next were the boys. Cadillac handled Reed City with ease, winning 54-32.
Sault Ste. Marie fourth quarter effort pushes Blue Devils past Pickford
SAULT STE. MARIE― The Pickford Panthers boys basketball second lost of the season last Friday dropped them out of the D-4 MHSAA rankings. Tonight, they hope to regain some momentum back heading into the playoffs in a few weeks as they travel to play D-2. 9-9, Sault Ste Marie Blue Devils. The game was 17-17 after the first quarter. 36-33 at half with the Blue Devils on top. 55-48 with the Soo up. Then the Blue Devils poured it on in the fourth winning 79-59.
Traverse City West hockey player critically injured, expected to recover
CADILLAC — The Cadillac and Traverse City West hockey associations say a player was critically injured during a game on Friday, Feb. 9. The player, Brady, reportedly suffered a neck/spine injury during the game. Parents and Dr. Mark Munro performed CPR and stabilized Brady before he was taken to the hospital. The hockey associations say Brady had surgery and will be in a halo spinal brace for several weeks, but he is on the road to a full recovery. They thank the parents, doctors and community for their support.
Cadillac and McBain both fall in Northern Michigan Showcase
TRAVERSE CITY - The 2nd Annual Northern Michigan showcase took place on Saturday. The McBain Ramblers fell to Hamtramck 58-35 in the first game, and Cadillac fell to Wayne Memorial 61-46 in the second game. McBain now has 2 losses on the year, both of those losses to division one schools, they will take on Traverse City St. Francis in their next game. Cadillac also only has 2 losses on the season after their loss on Saturday, they will take on Reed City in their next game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Years before Taylor Swift grew into the global superstar who has become the talk of this Super Bowl, she was just a young Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, singer happy to strum her guitar and perform as the opening act for the biggest sporting events in town. The U.S. Open. NASCAR. The World Series. No messy ticket rollouts necessary. Swift was tied to Francis Scott Key before Travis Kelce in her formative years, as the unsigned artist looked for any kind of break by belting out the national anthem in front of as many packed crowds as she could find. She sent her demo tapes “everywhere,” she told Rolling Stone in 2008.

Our cameras caught highlights from six boys and girls basketball matchups across northern Michigan on Friday night. BOYS BASKETBALL Rudyard 62, Pickford 52 The Rudyard Bulldogs erased an early first quarter deficit to hand rival Pickford their second loss of the season, 62-52 on Friday night. The win moves Rudyard into a tie with Pickford atop the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference. The Panthers won the first matchup between the two teams by 22 points back in early January. On Friday night, the Panthers opened up an 11-point lead in the first quarter, only to see Rudyard come back to take a 5-point lead at halftime. Rudyard (12-4, 7-1 EUP Conference) travels to Newberry on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Pickford (14-2, 7-1 EUP Conference) is on the road at Sault Ste. Marie on Monday night.
‘This kid, he’s magical’ Hillman’s Trenton Taratuta isn’t stopping at 2,000 points
HILLMAN - Trenton Taratuta is a senior at Hillman High School, he’s already broken the 2,000-point mark and continues to put up number for the Tigers basketball team. Taratuta entered this year with 1,612 career points only needing 68 more to break the school record, which of course he did just three games into the season in an overtime victory over Oscoda, in which he hit a buzzer beater three for the win. Taratuta is up there with some of the best players in the state, with his 2,000+ points. “It’s super special to be up there with some all-time great names like, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. So that was pretty cool to just see the guys that I’m up there with.” Said Taratuta. His coach, Eric Muszynski, knows that there’s not much better than having a 2,000-point scorer.
Benzie Central wrestling goes back-to-back with district titles
MAPLE CITY - The Benzie Central Huskies downed host Glen Lake in the district championship match, 69-12 to win their second consecutive district title, and their fourth district title in the past six seasons. The Huskies fell behind Glen Lake earlier in the title match, when Abraham Feeney earned a pin at 132 pounds for a 6-3 lead. Benzie Central responded by taking the next nine weight classes, five by pin, and four via voids by the Lakers. That gave Benzie Central a commanding 57-6 lead on the way to their victory. Glen Lake, in their first year with a wrestling program since 2001, advanced to the district title game with a 40-24 win over Frankfort in the first match of the evening. The fourth-ranked Huskies now advance to Regionals, on Wednesday, Feb. 14. They will meet Mancelona in the regional semifinal, with Roscommon taking on Whittemore-Prescott in the other semifinal at a location that is to be determined.
Brimley gets conference win over Cedarville-DeTour
BRIMLEY - In the Eastern Upper Peninsula Thursday evening, the 10-6 Brimley Bays welcomed in the 5-12 Cedarville/Detour Islanders in girls’ basketball action. The Islanders scored the first basket of the evening, but the Bays were too much for the Islanders winning 66-39. The Bays host the Onaway Cardinals Monday while the Islanders travel to Harbor Springs to play the Rams.
Central Michigan baseball and softball hope to find success through team culture
MOUNT PLEASANT— Wednesday, Central Michigan held their spring sports media day. Both baseball and softball programs spoke on the ways culture will affect the team throughout the season. Watch above to hear from baseball’s Robby Morgan and softball head coach McCall Salmon. Both teams will start their 2024 season on February 16.
Ferris State signs 37 players in 2024 class
BIG RAPIDS - On National Signing Day the Ferris State Bulldogs held a press conference, where head football coach Tony Annese addressed the media. The Bulldogs signed 37 players, 25 from Michigan, 11 from Florida and one from Ohio. The Bulldogs are coming off of an 8-3 season, where they exited the playoffs in the first round. Tony Annese talked about his staff recruiting in Florida, where more people are starting to find out about Ferris State. “They’re starting to know Ferris State really well, but they may not know us great. So, when I when I talk to them, I’m like, I’m not looking for D-2 guys, I’m looking for D-1 misses. (In Florida) we got D-1 misses because the transfer portal has impacted high school recruiting.” Annese also mentioned how important it was to get a high number of athletes in the class.
Six Traverse City Athletes sign national letters of intent, Brunan to MSU
TRAVERSE CITY - A half dozen athletes from the two public high schools in Traverse City signed national letters of intent to compete in their chosen sports at the college level. Traverse City West had five athletes sign, including football standout Kyler Brunan, who was originally committed to play at Army before deciding to instead go to Michigan State and compete at the Big Ten level. “It’s a little surreal,” Brunan said. “My whole life this has been my dream, Big Ten, especially Michigan State. So, it’s kinda cool, a dream come true. I just want another chance to prove myself.” Brunan’s high school teammate Adeyo Ilemobade also signed a letter of intent on Wednesday, committing to join the division two Davenport University football program.
Onaway cruises past Central Lake
CENTRAL LAKE - The Onaway Cardinals continued their strong run of play, racking up their sixth win in their last seven contests with a 59-28 win over Central Lake on Tuesday night. Onaway burst out to a quick lead, 22-4 at the end of the first quarter, and 47-11 at halftime. Marly Szymoniak led the Cardinals in scoring with a 21-point effort. Charlotte Box added 15 for Onaway. The Trojans were led offensively by Joelyssa Hayden’s 14 points.
Elk Rapids maintains spot atop Lake Michigan Conference with win over Grayling
ELK RAPIDS - The Elk Rapids Elks jumped out to an early lead, and did not look back in recording a 61-37 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Grayling on Tuesday night. The Elks, who dropped into a tie for first place in the Lake Michigan Conference when they fell to Harbor Springs last week, bounced back by defeating a Viking team that narrowly lost to the Rams late last week. Harbor Springs also won on Tuesday night, meaning that the Elks and Rams remain tied for first in the conference race. The Elks used a 15-0 run in the first quarter to break the game open, building an 11-point lead after one quarter of play, and expanding that to a 20-point bulge (31-11) at halftime. Kendall Standfest led the way for the Elks, scoring 18 points. She was joined in double figures by teammates Morgan Bergquist (16) and Hunter Shellenbarger (10).
Marion cheer earns first place at Marion Invitational
MARION— Tuesday night, the Marion Eagles hosted a cheer invitational. In attendance were the Farwell, Evart, McBain, and Shepherd varsity programs. Marion would take first place on the night with a score of 715.38. In second, was Farwell with a total of 657.9, and third place went to Evart with a score of 649.1. Not only did the Eagles have the highest total score on the night, but they swept all three rounds.
