McBain Northern Michigan Christian tops Evart in Highland play
EVART - McBain Northern Michigan Christian began their week that is bookended with games against Evart by topping the Wildcats 61-48 on Monday night. Tonight’s contest was a makeup of a game that was postponed from earlier this season. The same two teams will meet in McBain this Friday. Evart held a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Comets were able to turn things around, taking a slim 27-25 halftime lead. The Comets would break the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 20-8 to take a 47-33 advantage into the final stanza. Ethan Bennett led the way for the Comets, pouring in 27 points on the night. Titus Johns chipped in with 10 points for NMC.
Reed City blitzes Clare for non-conference win
REED CITY - The Reed City Coyotes put on an impressive defensive performance on Monday night, stifling Clare in a 48-11 non-conference victory on Monday evening. The Coyotes held the Pioneers, who had won 11 of their previous 12 games, to just two made field goals for the entire game. Reed City held Clare to just three free throws in the first half, as they built a dominating 28-3 lead. Molly Bowman led the way for the Coyotes, notching 18 points on the night. Casey Terryn chipped in with 11 points. Reed City (8-7) hosts McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Saturday. Clare (11-4) will look to bounce back when they host Pinconning on Friday night.
Cadillac tops McBain in convincing win
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings beat the McBain Ramblers in a non-conference girls basketball matchup Monday night. Cadillac held a 14 point lead at the half and used a big 3rd quarter to get a 58-22 win. The Vikings were led by Jazmin Angell with 17 and Madisyn Lundquist had 10, for McBain Shannon Maloney had 9. Cadillac improves to 8-5, while McBain drops to 5-7.
Manton gets big conference win over Roscommon
The Manton Rangers beat the Roscommon Bucks 51-37 in a Highland Conference clash Monday night. The Rangers were led by Lincoln Hicks with 21 points and Kaleb Musselman had 12, for Roscommon, Ben Hamina had 13 points. Manton is now 7-9 on the season and 6-6 in the Highland Conference, Roscommon drops to 7-9 on the year and 5-7 in the conference.
Earl ‘The Twirl’ Cureton, Pistons ambassador who won 2 NBA championships, has died
DETROIT (AP) — Earl “The Twirl” Cureton, who won two NBA championships in 12 seasons in the league, has died. He was 66. Cureton, who served as a community ambassador for the Detroit Pistons for the last 10 years, passed away “unexpectedly” on Sunday morning, according to a release from the Pistons. No other information was provided by the team. “Earl was one of the most generous, positive and caring people I knew,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said. “He was a loving father, devoted to his family, and I was honored to be his friend. He was a champion as a player and an important ambassador in our community. We are heartbroken over his loss.” The 6-foot-9 Cureton began his collegiate career with Robert Morris before transferring to Detroit Mercy for his final two seasons under then-coach Dick Vitale. The Detroit native was selected by Philadelphia in the third round of the 1979 NBA draft.
Ferris State Men and Women beat Michigan Tech in annual Red Out
BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State Bulldogs Women’s and Men’s basketball teams got wins over Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon. The women were up first and got a 63-54 win, it was a tie game going into the 4th, but the Bulldogs were able to pull away for the win. Chloe Idoni had a game-high 21 points in the Bulldogs win, they are now 16-2 on the season and will likely move up in the next NCAA rankings. On the men’s side Ferris got a 79-63 win, in a game that they led from the opening tip. Ben Davidson had a team-high 20 points for the Bulldogs as they shot almost 60% from the floor. the Bulldogs are on the road at Lake Superior State in their next game.

Here’s a rundown of the action our cameras caught on Friday night, Feb. 2: BOYS BASKETBALL Cadillac 58, Traverse City Central 44 The Cadillac Vikings opened up a 2-game lead in the Big North Conference standings, by completing the regular season sweep of Traverse City West with a 58-44 victory. Charlie Howell paced the Vikings’ offense with a 24-point effort. Cadillac (14-1, 7-0 BNC) travels to Petoskey on Thursday, Feb. 8. Traverse City West (12-5, 5-2 BNC) is on the road at Alpena on the same night.
Michigan promotes Campbell to offensive coordinator, Newsome to offensive line coach
ANN ARBOR (AP) — Michigan has promoted Kirk Campbell to offensive coordinator and Grant Newsome to offensive line coach on a new staff headed by Sherrone Moore following Jim Harbaugh’s departure. Campbell had worked as quarterbacks coach and Newsome had coached tight ends during Michigan’s 2023 national championship season. “Kirk and Grant are two bright offensive minds,” Moore said Friday in a statement announcing the promotions. “They have brought a lot to our offensive staff and will make even larger contributions in their new roles. I am excited to have Kirk and Grant take on greater responsibilities in our offense as they continue working with our players to help further their development on and off the field.” The moves come a week after Moore was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach. Moore takes over for Harbaugh, who received a five-year deal to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
Cadillac wrestlers edge Reed City to claim 131 Showdown
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings went down to the wire, just eking past Reed City in the final match of the night 37-36 to claim the 131 Showdown. Earlier in the evening, the Vikings earned a hard-fought 39-33 win over Pine River. In the second match of the evening, Reed City would top the Bucks 54-30, setting up the showdown with Cadillac. All three teams will now gear up for the start of the MHSAA state team playoffs, with districts getting underway on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for Cadillac and Reed City. Pine River will compete in districts on Thursday, Feb. 8.
McBain beats McBain Northern Michigan Christian
McBAIN - The McBain Ramblers beat the McBain Northern Michigan Christian Comets 66-35 in the battle of McBain on Thursday night. The Ramblers had the lead from the opening tip and were able to get their 7th straight win of the season. The McBain Ramblers are now 13-1 on the season, they’ll take on Roscommon in their next matchup. McBain NMC falls to 9-6, their next game is against Evart.
Glen Lake boys basketball takes road win over Frankfort
The Glen Lake Lakers visited the Frankfort Panthers on Thursday, winning 57-30. The win moves the Lakers to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the Northwest Conference. As for Frankfort, they’d fall to 10-6, 6-4. Glen Lake will host rival Leland on Tuesday in another conference contest. Frankfort will also look to bounce back to a conference foe on Tuesday when they host Benzie Central.
Pentwater has dominant road showing in win over Bear Lake
BEAR LAKE— Bear Lake hosted top-of-conference Pentwater on Thursday night. Pentwater walked into the matchup with an 10-1 West Michigan ‘D’ League record. Pentwater had a dominant showing winning 62-36 to advance to 11-1 in the WMDL. Their next game will be on Saturday against Baldwin at 6 pm. As for Bear Lake, they’ll look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Manistee Catholic Central.
Marion tops Manistee Catholic Central
MARION - The Marion Eagles beat the Manistee Catholic Central Sabers 60-36 in West Michigan ‘D’ League action Thursday night. The Eagles were led by Braden Prielipp with 15 and Gavin Prielipp had 14. For the Sabers Tyler Hallead had 10. Marion moves to 7-10 on the year, while Manistee Catholic Central drop to 4-12.
Big Rapids comes from behind to top Traverse City Central
BIG RAPIDS - The Big Rapids Cardinals scored a big come-from-behind win at home over Traverse City Central on Wednesday night, 4-3. The Trojans held a 1-0 after the first period and need just ten seconds in the second period to double that lead to two on a goal by Graham Peters. Big Rapids would then turn to their special teams to turn things around, cashing in on a power play a few minutes later to cut the gap to 2-1. And then midway through the second period Marek Mraz would get a shorthanded goal after a TC Central turnover at their own blue line gave Mraz a breakaway. The game would head to the third tied at two.
Manistee Catholic races out to early lead, tops Big Rapids Crossroads
BIG RAPIDS - A strong first half was enough to carry Manistee Catholic Central to a 39-29 road victory over Big Rapids Crossroads on Wednesday night. The Sabers started strong, leading 13-5 at the end of the first, and 33-7 at the half. The Cougars would try to rally, limiting Manistee Catholic to just six second half points, but they were unable to dig themselves completely out of the hole. The Sabers’ Brenna Johnson was the only player in double figures for either team, posting 10 points to lead Mansitee Catholic Central to victory.
Brethren gets road win over Mesick
MESICK - The Brethren Bobcats beat the Mesick Bulldogs 76-25 in West Michigan ‘D’ League action on Wednesday night. The Bobcats got a big lead early and were able to cruise to victory. Brethren’s Elly Sexton had a game-high 18 points and Grace Kidd had 14. Brethren is now 8-3 on the year, and remains unbeaten in the conference, Mesick fall to 3-9.
Kingsley holds off Buckley for Northwest Conference win
KINGSLEY - The Kingsley Stags beat the Buckley Bears 44-39 in Northwest Conference action Wednesday night. The Stags held a ten-point Advantage at the half and were able to hold on for the 5-point win. The Stags were led by Emilee Robinson with 17 points, and Buckley’s Kayla Milarch had a game-high 18 points. Kingsley moves to 9-5, they’ll play Suttons Bay in their next game. Buckley falls to 5-9, their next game is against Benzie Central.
Harbor Springs forges tie atop Lake Michigan Conference with win over Elk Rapids
HARBOR SPRINGS - The Harbor Springs Rams avenged an earlier loss to Elk Rapids, topping the Elks 48-41 on Tuesday night to tie the Elks at the top of the Lake Michigan Conference girls basketball standings. Elk Rapids won the previous matchup by ten points, and they led by four points at halftime on Tuesday night. But the Rams were able to close the gap in the second half, tying the game at 33 late in the third quarter, and then outscoring the Elks 15-8 in the fourth quarter for the victory. The Rams’ Olivia Flynn scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, including converting 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter. Bryleigh Rummer added 10 points for Harbor Springs. Elk Rapids’ Kendall Standfest led all scorers with a 20-point effort, but she was limited to just six points in the second half, as the Rams’ defense held the Elks to just four made field goals after halftime.
Cadillac beats Ludington in non-conference action
CADILLAC - The Cadillac Vikings beat the Ludington Orioles 66-51 in non-conference action on Tuesday night. Teh Vikings were down by eight early in this one, but rallied back to get their 13th win of the season. Cadillac’s Charlie Howell scored a game high 32 points, and Kyle McGowan dropped 13. For Ludington, David Shillinger had a team high 25 points. The Vikings are now 13-1 on the year and will take on Traverse City West in their next game, Ludington falls to 8-5 and will take on Fremont in their next game.
