Central Michigan Women's basketball falls to Buffalo
MT. PLEASANT - The Central Michigan Women’s basketball team fell at home to Buffalo 77-69 in their second game of MAC play. The Chippewas held a lead after the first quarter but weren’t able to sustain it throughout the game as the Bulls got the victory. The Chippewas were led in scoring by Karrington Gordon with 23 points and Nadege Jean chipped in with 18. Central Michigan is back in action against Akron on Wednesday as they aim to get their first win of MAC play.
All of the Sports Overtime Basketball and Hockey highlights for Jan. 5
Sports Overtime was on the sidelines and rinkside at nine different high school contests on Friday night. Here’s a rundown of the games we covered: GIRLS BASKETBALL Traverse City Central 40, Traverse City West 32 The Traverse City West defense stepped up in a big way in the second half, limiting the Trojans to just nine points, and allowing the Titans to earn a win in the cross-town rivalry. West made just three field goals in the second half. Lucia France led the Trojans with 13 points with Lorelai Zielinski adding ten. Mikayla Thompson and Grace Bohrer had 12 points apiece for the Titans. Central (3-3, 2-0 Big North) hosts Saginaw Heritage on Tuesday night. West (2-7, 0-2 BNC) travels to Cadillac on Tuesday.
Benzie Central Wrestling sweeps league meet at Pine River
LE ROY - The fourth-ranked Benzie Central Huskies earned a pair of Mid-Michigan Conference dual victories on Thursday night, topping host Pine River 47-22 in the first match, and defeating McBain 74-3 in the nightcap. The Bucks went 1-1 on the night, defeating Frankfort in their second match, 66-16. The Panthers had opened the meet with a 45-24 decision over McBain. Benzie Central jumped out a quick lead over an illness-depleted Pine River squad, taking the first five individual matchups to build an early 26-0 lead over their league rival. On the night, the Huskies got wins from 18 different individuals, with Ben DeRidder, Nathan Higgins, Jacob Gillison, Owen Cruden and Conner Wenkel each picking up a pair of wins apiece.
Glen Lake girls pull past Kingsley in Northwest Conference play
KINGSLEY— Thursday night the Kingsley Stags girls basketball team hosted the Glen Lake Lakers in a Northwest Conference contest. Both teams walked into the contest tied atop the conference, 2-0. But Thursday night, Glen Lake would take the road win 44-36 to move to 3-0 in the NW Conference, and 5-2 overall. Kingsley’s record would drop to 2-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall. The Stags will host again next Tuesday night when they welcome in the Frankfort Panthers. As for the Lakers, they’ll play host to Leland.
Bowling Green comes from behind to defeat Central Michigan women
MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan women’s basketball team looked impressive through the first three quarters of their MAC opener on Wednesday night, but they could not hold on in the fourth quarter, as visiting Bowling Green came from behind to edge the Chippewas 65-64. The Falcons’ Amy Velasco drew a foul with 0:31 left in a tied game and was able to sink one of two free throws to provide the winning margin. The Chippewas led by two points at the half, and nine points entering the fourth quarter, but went cold in the final frame, allowing Bowling Green to outscore them 18-8 to take the conference victory. Taylor Anderson scored a career-best 16 points to lead the Chippewas, to go along with six rebounds. Nadége Jean added ten points and 14 rebounds for CMU.
Mancelona hands East Jordan girls their first loss of the season
MANCELONA - The Mancelona Ironmen used a stifling defensive effort in the first half to build a lead that they were able to hold onto, handing visiting East Jordan its first loss of the season, 43-26. Mancelona was able to hold the Red Devils to just one made field goal in the first half, and nine total points, carrying a 27-9 advantage into the locker room at the half. Ella Schram led the Ironmen with 15 points with Ella Jones adding 10. June Kirkpatrick paced the Red Devil offense with 13 points.
Bellaire gets back to winning ways by doubling up Pellston
BELLAIRE - After suffering a pair of losses in a holiday tournament in Reed City last week against larger competition, the Bellaire Eagles returned to form on Wednesday night, racing out a big lead early and cruising to an 86-43 win over visiting Pellston. The Eagles started the game on a 24-3 run in the first quarter, as their full-court pressure proved to be difficult for the Hornets to contend with. Dawson Derrer led the Eagles with 16 points on the night. Jayden Hanson added 14 and Drake Koepke chipped in with a dozen. Eleven different Eagles scored in the contest. Jack Schmalzreid led all scorers, pouring in 18 points for Pellston. Josh Grondin added 10 points for the Hornets.
Reed City uses big 4th quarter to beat Traverse City Christian
REED CITY - The Reed City Coyotes beat the Traverse City Christian Sabres 79-58 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening. It was a high scoring affair, with the Coyotes scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter to help them get the win. Reed City was led in scoring by Max Hammond with 30 points, and Marcos Cuidad-Real added 18. For the Sabres Reece Broderick had a game high 32 points. Reed City move to 7-2 on the year, and they’ll take on Midland Dow in their next matchup. Traverse City Christian drop to 7-2 and they’ll take on Manistee in their next matchup.
Big Rapids win close one against Traverse City St. Francis
BIG RAPIDS - In a Non-Conference matchup on Wednesday night the Big Rapids Cardinals beat the Traverse City St. Francis Gladiators 52-51. It was a close game throughout the night, and it came down to the wire with Big Rapids outscoring TC St. Francis 13-9 in the 4th quarter. Big Rapids was led by Gabe Njenga with 19 points and Ty Gielczyk added 13, for the Gladiators Max Ogden had a game high 20 points. Big Rapids moves to 7-2 on the year, they’ll take on Traverse City West in their next game, TC St. Francis falls to 3-3 they’ll host Kalkaska in their next game.
Lake Superior State Men’s Basketball wins big against Kuyper
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State University Lakers men’s basketball team welcomed in the Kuyper College Cougars (Grand Rapids) to the Bud Cooper Gymnasium this afternoon. The 8-3 Lakers were looking for their ninth win of the season before heading to Big Rapids Saturday to play the #17 ranked Ferris State University Bulldogs. In the first ten minutes of the game, the Cougars hung close but the Lakers pulled away to lead at halftime 49-28. The Lakers continued to dominate in the second half scoring another 49 points to the Cougars 38.
Pine River beats Evart to earn first win of 2024
PINE RIVER - The Pine River Bucks beat the Evart Wildcats 64-47 in a highland conference matchup. It was both teams first game of 2024. The Bucks led by 10 points at half and were able to get the win. Pine River improves to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Highland Conference, they’ll take on Manton in their next game. Evart drops to 2-4 and they’ll take on McBain in their next matchup.

MOUNT PLEASANT— Tuesday night, Central Michigan men’s basketball opened conference play against MAC foe Buffalo. The Chippewas entered the night 5-7 on the season, as for the Bulls, they entered conference play just 1-11. The Bulls were able to jump out to a quick start on the night, Guard Ryan Sabol dropping 15 points in the first half followed by Sy Chatman with 10. They would lead the Chippewas 36-18 at the half. “They’ve got a difference maker obviously in the Chatman kid, all you got to do is look at the line. And he was the best player on the floor tonight. They had the best player we didn’t. And he played like it,” Chippewas head coach Tony Barbee said after the game.
TC North Stars 12U girl’s hockey team needs your help getting to ‘The Howe’ Mrs. Hockey Invite
The Traverse City North Stars 12U Tier 2 Red girl’s hockey team is a travel team made up of girls from Traverse City, Elk Rapids, Petoskey, Cadillac and Charlevoix. Members tried out for the team in May, have been practicing since June, completed a three day intensive skating “Training Camp” in August, and attended an elite Canadian preseason tournament in September (where they took home two wins!). In January 2024, the team will participate in the Mrs. Hockey Invite, also known as “The Howe.” This is the premier 12U-only girls travel hockey event in North America, and only a handful of teams are invited to the tournament each year. The Red team are the first Grand Traverse Hockey Association players to ever receive this honor, and for many of them it will be a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.

Lions take issue with officials after potential winning 2-point pass is negated by penalty
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Detroit coach Dan Campbell said he explained to officials before playing the Dallas Cowboys what would happen on a 2-point conversion play the Lions had planned. Chaos ensued anyway, and left the Lions feeling as if a victory was taken away from the NFC North winners in their pursuit of the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Officials ruled offensive lineman Taylor Decker wasn’t an eligible receiver when he caught a 2-point conversion pass that would have given Detroit a one-point lead with 23 seconds remaining. Instead, the Lions (11-5) lost to the Cowboys 20-19 on Saturday night when the third 2-point try was an incomplete pass short of the goal line.
Morley Stanwood remains unbeaten, wins Reed City Holiday Tournament
REED CITY - The Morley Stanwood Mohawks remained unbeaten on the season beating the Fremont Packers in the Reed City Holiday Tournament Championship 55-46. The Mohawks were led by Lila Hosington with 16 points, Lynsey Biller had 14, and Makenna Martin had 13. For Fremont, Jessica Bennett and Mia Clemence both had 13 points. Morley Stanwood moves to 6-0 on the season and will take on Lake City in their next game, while Fremont drops to 3-2 and they’ll take on Howard City Tri County in their next matchup.
Ferris State Men’s Basketball beats Kuyper behind Ethan Erickson’s career high
BIG RAPIDS - The nationally 17th-ranked Ferris State University men’s basketball dominated visiting Kuyper College 111-44. Ethan Erickson set a new school record in the victory, knocking down 11 three-point field goals en route to a game-high and career-high 36 points. Jack Ammerman had 14 points and Ben Davidson had 13 in the win. Ferris State forced 34 turnovers as they improved to 11-2 on the season, their next game will be against Lake Superior State.
Ferris State Men’s basketball beats Fanshawe
BIG RAPIDS - The #17 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs Men’s basketball team beat Fanshawe 100-48 for their 10th win of the season. The Bulldogs led from the opening tip and kept their foot on the gas the whole game. Ferris made 14 three-pointers and shot over 50% from the field. The Bulldogs had three scorers with 15 points, Dolapo Olayinka, Ben Davidson, and Ethan Erickson. They will take on Kuyper in their next game on Saturday at 3 P.M.
Bay Reps’ Grant Lucas’ third period hat trick lifts Traverse City to first-ever Scott Miller Memorial Tournament title
TRAVERSE CITY— The Traverse City Bay Reps defeated the Rockford Rams 5-2 Friday afternoon in the championship game of the annual Scott Miller Memorial Tournament. The win would mark the Reps’ first-ever in tournament history. It would also be head coach Mike Matteucci’s 100th win at the helm of the Bay Reps program. James Miller was the first to net a goal on the night for the Rams, but TC’s Lars Millar found Thomas Boynton-Fisher for a quick response to wrap the first period 1-1. In the second it would be much of the same, a goal netted by Rams’ Nathan Dixon, and a quick reply from the Reps’ captain Ethan Coleman. The second would finish tied at two.
Fremont beats Reed City to advance in Reed City Holiday Tournament
REED CITY - The Fremont Packers beat the Reed City Coyotes, 53-49 to advance to the Reed City Holiday Tournament Championship. It was a close game throughout, with both teams trading buckets, but Fremont was able to come away with the win. Fremont will take on Morley Stanwood in the Championship tomorrow at 3, and Reed City will play Alpena in the consolation.
