‘These rooms are packed,’ Boyne City’s athletic facility is built Boyne Tough
BOYNE CITY - The Boyne City Ramblers have a new athletic facility equipped with indoor turf, a track, a brand-new weight room, and much more. The donations came from both boosters and the district. Boyne City physical education teacher, David Hills has seen the increase of students interested in athletics since the new facility opened. “These rooms are packed. I mean, this fieldhouse, you come in here any day after school, or any weekend, it’s packed. Our weight room, our program is getting bigger all the time. We’re adding classes, our middle school has added two strength and conditioning classes alone for our 7th and 8th graders and those will be filled up.” Said Hills. “We’ll have kids in here every hour of the day, during school and you know, ultimately that’s what you’re trying to do at a school of this size. You want kids to be able to participate in a multitude of sports.” The Ramblers athletic director, Matt Windle, talked about how the new facility has impacted the student’s daily lives.
Traverse City’s Kelsey Swanson named Michigan women’s hockey captain for 2024-25 season
Traverse City native Kelsey Swanson was named Michigan’s ACHA D1 women’s hockey teams’ captain for the 2024-25 season. In the 2023-24 season, she served as an alternate captain for the team. This past season was her second with the Wolverines, after spending her first two college seasons in the NCAA D1 ranks at Long Island University. She was the first woman from Traverse City to go on to play D1 hockey. In her two years with the Wolverines, she has recorded 18 goals and 18 assists. “She’s now one of the faces of our program, I’m so excited for her, and I’m so excited to have her,” women’s head coach Jenna Trubiano said.
Traverse City West opens season with home shutout victory
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City West Titans kicked off their 2024 season with a 2-0 victory at home over Ludington on a chilly Thursday evening. Nora Buttleman scored her first career varsity goal in the contest. Avery Plummer netted the other Titan goal, as Traverse City West built a 2-0 lead at the half. Claire Miner earned the victory in net for Traverse City West. Traverse City West (1-0) hosts Elk Rapids on Saturday afternoon. Ludington (0-2) will play their home opener on Wednesday, April 10 against Montague.
Grayling scores shutout victory over Houghton Lake in season opener
GRAYLING - The Grayling Vikings started a new season on the right foot, scoring early in the first half on the way to a 5-0 season-opening victory over visiting Houghton Lake on Wednesday evening. Edith Boik scored a pair of goals in the contest, including what would prove to be the game-winning goal less than five minutes into the contest on a free kick. Quincy Stirling recorded a goal and an assist for the Vikings, with Olivia Duba and Molly Wright also notching goals in the win. The Vikings led 3-0 at halftime.
Kingsley and Buckley play to a draw as both teams open their seasons
BUCKLEY - The Buckley Bears and Kingsley Stags played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening. Amelia Valentine had the goal for Buckley and Bailey Charter was the lone scorer for the Stags. Buckley will take on Cadillac Heritage Christian in their next game, while Kingsley will play Reed City.
Lions match 49ers’ 3-year, $12M offer to retain Brock Wright, AP source says
DETROIT — The Detroit Lions retained tight end Brock Wright, preventing the San Francisco 49ers from signing the restricted free agent. Detroit decided to match the 49ers’ $12 million, three-year offer to Wright, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms were not announced. Wright, 25, has 43 career catches for 424 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons with the Lions. He had a 29-yard reception in the playoffs against Tampa Bay, helping Detroit win two games in one postseason for the first time since winning the 1957 NFL title.

BIG RAPIDS - On a rainy and windy evening in Big Rapids, the Ludington Orioles fell 1-0 to the Big Rapids Cardinals behind a 2nd half goal from Hadley Fox. Big Rapids move to 1-0-0 on the year, while Ludington falls to 0-1-0.
CMU offense plates 19 runs in win over Grace Christian
MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan baseball team took care of business on Monday afternoon, pounding out 16 hits and scoring 19 runs in a 19-3 non-conference win over visiting Grace Christian. Drew Loikits led the Chippewas’ hit parade, going 5-for-6 in the game with three runs scored, and a pair of RBI. Cole Prout went 2-for-4 and drove in three for CMU. Eight different Chippewas had hits in the contest. Central Michigan (9-20) returns to action at home on Friday, April 5 against Toledo.

MOUNT PLEASANT— The Central Michigan football team ended their 2023 season with a 5-7 record, just one win short of bowl eligibility. They dropped their last three games to MAC foes Western Michigan, Ohio, and Toledo. Sports reporter Kennedy Broadwell chatted with Chippewas head coach Jim McElwain after their sixth spring practice and cover topics such as the transfer portal, current quarterback room, and how the team plans on being more consistent come the 2024 season. Ferris State splits home doubleheader with rival GVSU
BIG RAPIDS - In a pair of pitching duels, the Ferris State Bulldogs and Grand Valley State Lakers split a GLIAC softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Ferris State won the first game 2-1, and the Lakers turned around and took the nightcap by the same 2-1 count. The Bulldogs capitalized on a GVSU error in the third inning of game one to score both of their runs. Abby Meyer and Jadyn Joseph drove in the two Ferris State runs. Aryn Gallacher went the distance to earn the win in the circle, racking up four strikeouts while only allowing two hits and one walk. The second game went to extra innings, with the Lakers getting an RBI single from MaryJane Goodman to earn the split. The Lakers grabbed the lead in the fourth inning, and held it until the bottom of the sixth, when Ferris’s Emma Gillard drove in a run with an RBI single to tie the game up.
Lions are getting new uniforms in April, so we took a look at some of their previous designs
CADILLAC — The Detroit Lions posted online Thursday that they will be unveiling new uniforms on April 18. For context ahead of the reveal, we bring you a look at the evolution of the Lions’ look over the team’s recent history. Despite an early experiment with some red and black color schemes for road games, the team’s main color scheme has remained remarkably consistent since the team’s founding, with Honolulu blue and silver the two primary uniform colors, and white being used for outlines, stripes and numbering on occasion. When William Clay Ford took over the team in the early 1960s, he added the original Lions logo to the team’s silver helmets.
Wisconsin Rower and Elk Rapids native Garrison Waugh is heading into his final semester
MADISON, WI - Current Wisconsin rower, Garrison Waugh, graduated from Elk Rapids high school in 2020 and is now in his last semester of college in Madison. The former Elk won the Jablonic Award for the most valuable freshman during the 2020-21 season and has been a member of the varsity team for all four years, this year earning a captain position on team 149. Waugh has also been a part of the All-Big Ten All-Academic team for the past three years, something he’s proud of. “I think I’d be lost without rowing because it just gives you so much structure with the morning practices, and in the afternoon like you got to cram stuff in there and get it done. That’s certainly something I pride myself on.” Said Waugh. “I came here to be a student first and then an athlete, and that was one of the big things that the recruiting coordinator at the time told me is that if it doesn’t work out. You have to love the school and you have to love the program you’re in.” Wisconsin’s next race will be on April 6th in the Pac-12 Invitational in California.
Grayling’s Tristan Demlow once in a lifetime opportunity to represent the USA in the United World Games
GRAYLING - Grayling junior Tristan Demlow is getting a one-of-a-kind opportunity after being selected by PhD Hoops to represent the United States in the United World Games this June in Austria and Italy. He will spend 10 days in Europe, organized by PhD Hoops. The United World Games is a youth tournament in Europe where, up to 15 sports, 35 countries represented, and 12,000 athletes from around the world. (PhD Hoops, United World Games). For Tristan at just 17 years old he will be playing for the U19 squad. His father and the assistant coach for Grayling Basketball, Josh Demlow is excited for the opportunity his son has. “It’s an incredible thing for him to be able to experience and get to go represent the United States playing over in Austria.” Demlow Said. “You always want to be competing against the best possible competition you can.” For Tristan getting the chance to see other parts of the world and play basketball is a dream come true.

CMU men's basketball standout Anthony Pritchard entering transfer portal
MOUNT PLEASANT - CMU junior guard Anthony Pritchard announced in a social media post Thursday that he intends to leave the Chippewas and enter the transfer portal. The First Team All-MAC and MAC Co-Defensive Player of the year for the 2023-2024 season posted a thank you to the team, school and community online. “First and foremost, I’d like to thank everyone who supported me this past year at CMU,” his post began. “My teammates, coaches, the staff and fans, thank you for making it a great experience. CMU will always be home to me. Although it was a tough decision, I have decided to do what’s best for my college career at this point and I will be entering the transfer portal.” Pritchard joined the Chippewas this past season after spending his first two years playing at Tulsa. Pritchard shone for CMU, leading the team in scoring (12.8 PPG), assists (4.7 APG) and steals (48) while becoming the first Chippewa to earn All-MAC first team honors since 2017. He was just the second player in CMU history to earn the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award, joining Chris Kaman in 2003.
Leland’s Mallory Lowe is a recipient of the MHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Awards.
LELAND - The MHSAA and Farm Bureau Insurance, will give $2,000 college scholarships to 32 individuals. Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. Leland senior Mallory Lowe is a tri-sport varsity athlete for the Comets, playing soccer for all four years, while playing basketball and volleyball for three. Lowe found out about the award from her older sister, sister, Olivia. “She applied for the scholarship when she was a senior and she got it too. So that’s kind of how I heard about it.” Said Lowe “I found out in an email (that she won) and I was super excited. I ran to my mom’s office and I was like, I got it, she was super happy for me.” For Mallory Lowe being a scholar and an athlete is something that goes hand in hand.
