The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations (MBI) Detectives are investigating and have determined that the fire was likely deliberately set by an inmate housed inside a cell.

Two inmates were treated and released at Baptist Memorial Hospital; one for possible smoke inhalation and one for minor burns. In addition, three deputies were also taken to the hospital and treated for possible smoke inhalation, but are expected to make a full recovery and are back at work.

According to the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department, all inmates have been accounted for and no other injuries have been reported. Damage estimates have not yet been completed.

Sheriff Eddie Hawkins made the following statement in a Facebook post:

"All safety measures were in place and all protocols were followed. This is something that we train for. We are very fortunate that no serious injuries occurred. Criminal charges could be filed once the investigation into the fire is complete."
