Established in 1973, the holiday was begun to recognize the first female police offer ever hired in America, according to the Holiday Calendar website.

In a post from Horn Lake Police Department's social media, the police department recognized women across the nation who serve in the police force, but gave special recognition to the women working within its own office.

The women celebrated from Horn Lake Police Department are Chief Pullen, Lieutenant Sanderson, Detective Chase, Officer Moss, Officer Grieves, Officer Lawson, and Officer Williamson. Photographs of the women in blue were shared, along with a heartfelt message stating, "It may be a little biased, but we think we have some of the best in the business."
