According to WTVA, Hathcock first began his time with Smithville Police Department in 1995, when he began employment as an auxiliary officer.

Mayor Phil Goodwin, who was the chief of police at the time Hathcock began his service, notes that at one time Hathcock was named Officer of the Year. This was before Hathcock was named police chief. He would serve in that position until his retirement, seeing the community through good times and bad, including the devastating 2011 tornado that tore through the area.

Mayor Goodwin presented Hathcock with a plaque that acknowledged his years of service to the Smithville community.
