After a suspect allegedly opened fire on the driver of an 18-wheeler, he was injured in a shooting involving an officer with Jackson Police Department.

According to WJTV, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said after two 18-wheelers were involved in a collision, the gunfire happened on I-220.

Chief Wade stated that a man got out of a stolen Volvo and began to shoot at one of the drivers of the 18-wheelers. The Volvo is believed to have been stolen from another county, according to Wade.

Officers pursued the suspect to McCain Avenue. Chief Wade said, “He brandished the weapon, pointed at the narcotics detectives. They fired upon him, striking him in the lower extremities. He appears to be recovering from those injuries."

The officers were not harmed during the shooting, and were able to recover the suspect's weapon as well as the stolen vehicle.

The shooting is being investigated. More information will be released as it becomes available.
