BROOKHAVEN — A threat of flash flooding continues in southwest Mississippi. The National Weather Service warns the risk continues through Friday thanks to high rain chances and forecasted local rainfall events.

Wednesday morning, the forecasted chance of rain was 90 percent with showers and storms possible into the evening.  NWS Jackson warns localized rain totals from thunderstorms could be between two to four inches in some areas through Friday. Low lying areas, urban places and other areas could be at risk.

Rain chances continue Thursday with an 80 percent chance of rain. The forecasted highs is 84 for the days. Friday’s rain chances drop to 50 percent and the temperature will start to climb to a high of 90.

NWS Jackson forecasts the high to return to 90 degrees again on Saturday with a 50 percent chance of rain. Sunday and Monday’s rain chances jump right back up to 60 percent with highs forecast at 92 degrees. Tuesday is forecast to have a 60 percent chance of rain.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports there are no tropical disturbances predicted in the next 48 hours or seven days. We will continue to monitor tropical storm development in the Gulf of Mexico. NOAA reports the Saharan Dust carried across the Atlantic from Africa impacts the development of tropical storms.

According to NWS Jackson records, Lincoln County recorded six straight days of measurable rainfall as of Wednesday morning. The longest streak of measurable rainfall came in June, 1983 with 13 straight days of rainfall ending on June 27. If the forecasts hold true, the July 2024 streak of rainy days could end up in the top 10. The streak has to reach 9 to tie a records set in 2004 and 1957.
