Firework safety for the 4th of July: What you need to know before you pop
HOUSTON (KIAH)– As you prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with fireworks, keep in mind that safety should be top of mind to prevent serious injuries. Last week kicked off the first week of fireworks sales and Top Dog Fireworks wants to ensure that Houstonians stay safe and understand where it’s legal to pop. All local cities ban shooting fireworks in their boundaries. Fireworks can’t be shot within 600 feet of a church, hospital, day care center, school or within 100 feet of a place where flammable liquids or fireworks are around. Never throw fireworks out from a vehicle.
Why can heat be more dangerous than you realize?
HOUSTON — Hot weather can feel like a nuisance but it can have an extreme effect on your body. When the body gets above its usual temperature -- around 98.6 degrees -- it takes a series of actions trying to cool us off. Blood starts pumping, blood vessels dilate, and tiny capillaries go to work trying to pull the heat to our skin’s surface. The sweat glands also kick into gear, pushing liquid that includes salt onto our skin. When that liquid, better known as sweat, evaporates it also helps to cool us off.
