In an application filed with the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC), Ameren Missouri recently sought permission to build the 800 MW natural gas-fueled Castle Bluff Energy Center as a flexible backup source for its customers.

The company pitched the idea as necessary due to rising energy demands and the increasing threat of extreme weather. The simple-cycle facility could be called upon during the hottest summer days and coldest winter nights when demand is highest. It was willing to invest around $900 million into the idea, which would focus on a site in St. Louis County. At the time of filing, it had already confirmed existing infrastructure in the area and transmission line access, which could reduce overall construction time and costs.

“Customers across the state count on the reliable, affordable energy Ameren Missouri provides around the clock, and Castle Bluff will be one of the ways we’re going to be able to meet their needs in the future,” said Mark Birk, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri. “The on-demand energy Castle Bluff will provide will also help support the higher levels of renewable energy we’re integrating in the coming years.”

Ameren provides electric service to approximately 1.2 million customers and gas service to 135,000 throughout central and eastern Missouri. If its ideas for Castle Bluff are approved, it anticipates starting construction in 2026 and could be operational in 2027.
