Woman Poisons Husband’s Soda Over Unappreciative Response to Birthday Party

A Missouri woman was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action after allegedly attempting to poison her husband. Police said the motive was her husband’s lack of appreciation for the 50th birthday party she had organized for him.

The 47-year-old esthetician was arrested on Monday following her husband’s complaints to the Laclede County Sheriff’s Office. According to the New York Post, he suspected he was being poisoned after noticing a strange taste in the Diet Mountain Dew he stored in their garage refrigerator beginning around May 1. Despite the initial suspicion, he continued to drink the soda, which led to severe health symptoms, including a sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and release of a thick, brown-yellow mucus.

Authorities said the situation escalated when Peters’ husband reviewed security footage from their garage on June 12. The video allegedly captured Peters removing the soda from the refrigerator along with a bottle of Roundup weed killer, taking the items inside their house, and then returning them to their original places shortly after. After growing more suspicious, Peters’ husband strategically replaced the bottles in the refrigerator to see if the tampering would continue.

He also claimed the Roundup bottle was nearly empty, and a new one had appeared. While expressing his health concerns to his wife, she dismissively told him that he probably “had COVID” and advised him to keep his distance from their grandchildren. Amid growing fears for his safety, Peters’ husband installed an additional camera in the garage. The new surveillance footage allegedly showed Peters handling the soda and insecticide.

Her husband filed a report with the sheriff’s office, and officers seized two bottles of Roundup, a two-liter bottle of soda, and a bottle of insecticide for further investigation. During interrogation, Peters expressed that she wished she had filed for divorce after being confronted with the security footage and called her husband selfish.

She expressed regret over the incident, particularly upset that her husband did not appreciate the effort put in for his birthday party. Prior to the confession, Peters initially told officers that she was testing a new weedkiller recipe she found on Pinterest.
