Top to Toe 5K Race Coming to Mitchell County on August 3rd
The Top to Toe 5K is an adventurous descent from the top of a quto the bottom of the Toe River valley. Built for record chasers and families alike, this course begins at The Quartz Corp’s Chalk Mountain and ends at Riverside Park in Spruce Pine. The race proceeds benefit Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce, NC Mineral and Gem Festival. Each registered participant receives one free admission ticket to the NC Mineral and Gem Festival as well as a t-shirt!

Roy Cooper on Thursday pardoned four ex-offenders and commuted the sentences of four others convicted of crimes to the time they've already served.Three of the four receiving commutations have been serving decades-long sentences for armed robbery and conspiracy convictions related to robbing members of a Mitchell County church on a Sunday morning in 2008.Those convicted in the Ridgeview Presbyterian Church robberies - brothers Josiah Deyton and Andrew Deyton as well as Jonathan Koniak, are now all in their mid-30s. Future of Deyton and Harris School Properties
Mitchell County Schools will hold a public forum for anyone interested in potential future uses of the Deyton and Harris school properties Thursday, July 11th beginning at 6pm in the Auditorium at Harris Middle School in Spruce Pine. Mitchell County Schools has posted a public notice seeking offers for the Deyton Elementary School and Harris Middle School real property and grounds. The school system by law must offer the properties to the county first, then open up for bids that can be upset.
