In August of 1971, sitting side by side on a brown couch in Jerry Bottom of Huddy, Ky., my sister, Teri, and I gave our hearts to Jesus. We were baptized together, went to Sunday School together and Training Union on Sunday nights. (Extra points if you know what that is.) We were in youth group together and youth choir. During VBS, we drank Kool-Aid and ate cheap cookies together. (It was the ‘70s - before good cookies and snacks.)
Man council approves contract to paint mural in town
MAN – The Man Town Council moved Monday evening to approve the contract for the painting of a 110-foot mural in town. Last month, the council approved beginning the legal process of allowing the mural to be painted, which will be located on a large concrete wall in town across from Gino’s Pizza. This time, the council approved the contract with artist Dana Evans at a cost of $12,950.
Loganwood grand opening held Tuesday
LOGAN — After years in the making, the new Loganwood Apartments complex was scheduled for its grand opening celebration late Tuesday morning. The 33-unit apartment complex, located on the corner of Hudgins and Hinchman streets in Logan near the U.S. Post Office and McCoy Station, has been in the planning stages since late 2019. The apartments are the result of tax credits awarded by the West Virginia Housing Development Fund and by equity provided by Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing.
Town of Man hosting photo contest with one-day free trail pass
MAN — From now until July 26, the Town of Man is giving citizens a free one-day Hatfield-McCoy trail pass as part of a photo contest. Man Mayor John Fekete, who also serves as the deputy executive director of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, explained that the contest is a way to encourage residents to visit the new Almost Heaven swing on Trail 21 of the Rockhouse Trail system. The swing, which is located high on the mountain and overlooks South Man, is one of two swings located in Logan County.
Man council approves $8K wiring upgrade project for Christmas lights
MAN — The Man Town Council Monday approved phase one of an upgrade project for wiring of the town’s annual Christmas lights. The project will involve the burying of electrical lines from the war memorial all the way to the first drain at the bottom of the exit ramp near the traffic signals, Mayor John Fekete said. The project involves everything that’s required, including the wiring and plugins.

Altercation leads to deadly shooting
LENORE — A deadly shooting occurred on July 5 in Lenore. According to a press release by the West Virginia State Police earlier in the day, Trooper J. C. Morrison responded to a shooting at a residence between Lenore and Naugatuck along Rt. 65. The victim identified as 42-year-old Charles Speer of Kermit traveled to the residence of 50-year-old David Hodge of Lenore. A physical altercation occurred, during which Speer was shot multiple times. Speer was transported to Williamson ARH where he was pronounced dead. Speer is being sent to Frankfort, Kentucky for an autopsy.
