Area roundup: Hawkins, Cook carry tie into final round of Junior Am
DAVIS — A Day 1 tie for the lead of the girls championship division of the West Virginia Junior Amateur golf tournament held true through the second round. Hurricane’s Savannah Hawkins and Kerri-Anne Cook, of Oceana, each carded 73s in the second round at Canaan Valley Resort on Tuesday. Both shot 77 on Monday. That leaves them tied atop the leaderboard at 6-over-par entering the final round of the tournament on Wednesday.
Logan hosts annual Freedom Festival with some of largest crowds yet
LOGAN — Another year of the West Virginia Freedom Festival has came and went, and downtown Logan saw some of its biggest crowds ever in 2024. For its 25th year in Logan, the Freedom Festival brought in 1990s country superstars Lonestar, a band known for numerous country chart hits like “No News,” “Come Cryin’ to Me,” “Smile,” “What About Now,” and “I’m Already There.” One of their songs, a ballad entitled “Amazed,” even topped the coveted Billboard Hot 100 in 1999.
Williamson Hospital tests helicopter pad
WILLIAMSON — Williamson Hospital tested their new helipad on June 25 in preparation for reopening. Healthnet Aeromedical Services made the trial run for the hospital. “Thank you to Joey Carey and Healthnet staff for experimenting with the landing service,” Williamson Hospital said in a post. “While Williamson Memorial currently offers primary care services as well as podiatry, more will be coming soon.”

A Pinsonfork, Kentucky, man has been returned to custody after he escaped from a work detail last week. Andrew J. Eastwood, 48, of Pond Creek Road, was booked at the Pike County Detention Center on charges of second-degree escape, probation violation, failure to appear, contempt of court and parole violation on June 19.
Pike travel nurse indicted in federal crackdown on health care fraud
BECKLEY, W.Va. — A Pike County travel nurse who has been under investigation for the past two years has now been indicted on federal drug charges. Jacqueline Brewster, 54, of Belfry, has been charged in U.S. District Court in Beckley, W.Va., with obtaining controlled substances by fraud, tampering with consumer products, and wrongfully obtaining individually identifiable health information under false pretenses.

HUNTINGTON — A man has been charged in a fatal shooting that occurred Friday night in Huntington. Deonte Malik Joplin, 25, of Matewan, West Virginia, was jailed at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Western Regional Jail and Correctional Facility. Bond was not set.
