HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Heavy downpours crossed the region on Tuesday, delivering a punch in the gut to our 4th heat wave of the season. This latest hot spell will go down as the one where the temperature hit 99 at local airports on two straight days. While downtown thermometers breeched triple digits, the official numbers will go into the record books at 99.
CPS referral leads to arrest
WILLIAMSON — Three individuals were arrested and charged following a Child Protective Services referral. Natasha Franks, 35 of Belfry, Cassandra Timmons, 49 of Williamson and Jonda Whitt, 33 of Peach Creek were arrested for two counts of possession with intent to deliver and one count of conspiracy. Franks also was charged with one count of child neglect creating risk of injury.

Jan-Care to respond to Dunlow-area EMS calls
WAYNE — Jan-Care Ambulance Service has been assigned Dunlow’s first-response area, according to B. J. Willis, director of Wayne County 911/emergency management. Willis, who spoke during a regular meeting of the Wayne County Commission on Monday, described some of the preparations leading up to Jan-Care taking on its role as the primary first responders for that service area.
200 attend 2nd annual Justin Marcum Law Office Basketball Camp
WILLIAMSON — Over 200 local hoopers came out for the second annual Justin Marcum Law Office Basketball Camp on Saturday, July 13 inside the historic Williamson Fieldhouse. For the second year in a row the camp was free of charge, with every camper receiving a camp T-shirt. Three Marshall players were in attendance helping with the camp, including former Chapmanville star Obinna Anochili-Killen along with Herd teammates Nate Martin and Ryan Nutter. Former Mingo Central star and Marshall and University of Pikeville standout Jeremy Dillon also served as a camp instructor.
Woman charged with neglect after police say children found with flies landing on them
WHITMAN — A Whitman woman has been charged with child neglect after authorities say three children were left alone inside a home with no power and had flies landing on them. That’s according to a criminal complaint filed on public record in Logan County Magistrate Court by Senior Trooper R.L. Morgan of the Logan detachment of the West Virginia State Police. Morgan writes in the complaint that on Saturday, July 13, he received a complaint about a stolen utility trailer and found a trailer matching its description in the yard of a residence at Whitman.

MOUNT GAY — Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s stage production of “The Wizard of Oz” will continue for its final leg of shows this weekend. The show, which opened this past weekend to large audiences, will start its second week this Thursday and will run through Sunday. The show will begin at 7 p.m. each evening and a daytime matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday as well.
Ribbon cut to Loganwood apartments
LOGAN – After years in the making, the new Loganwood housing complex in downtown Logan is now officially open for renters. The four-story apartment complex, which cost over $9 million and took close to six years to develop and complete, had its grand opening ceremony Tuesday, July 9. The nearly 30-minute ceremony had an array of speakers which included county officials, city leaders, and members of the building’s development firm.
Mount Gay man charged with attempted murder after Saturday stabbing
VERDUNVILLE — A Mount Gay man was jailed over the weekend on charges of attempted murder and malicious assault after deputies say he stabbed a man in the Mud Fork area. Deputy C.B. Frye of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office writes in a criminal complaint that on Saturday, July 13, he responded to a stabbing/shooting call from Logan County 911 in the Breezewood Ave. area of Verdunville. 911 told Frye that a man had been stabbed three times and the suspect, who was identified as Brian Eugene Belcher, 43, of Mount Gay, had fled on foot heading up Mud Fork.
