Diamondbacks to designate struggling catcher for assignment
The Diamondbacks are designating catcher Tucker Barnhart for assignment, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Piecoro indicates that the move will clear space on the club’s roster for Gabriel Moreno to be activated from the injured list prior to the club’s next game against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Mariners catcher hit by pitch on wrist
The Mariners had an injury scare this evening as catcher Mitch Garver was struck in the wrist by a pitch from Twins right-hander Joe Ryan during this afternoon’s game and exited with what Seattle termed a right wrist contusion. As noted by MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer, manager Scott Servais told reporters after the game that x-rays on Garver’s wrist came back negative, but that the club doesn’t plan on making a decision about next steps regarding the 33-year-old until Tuesday given the club has tomorrow off.
Brewers set to welcome back dynamic young outfielder
The Brewers are set to welcome outfielder Garrett Mitchell back from the injured list Monday, as manager Pat Murphy told reporters (including MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy). The Brewers are optioning infielder Tyler Black to the minor leagues to make room for Mitchell on the active roster, although they’ll still need to clear a 40-man roster spot to accommodate his activation from the 60-day IL prior Monday’s game against the Rockies in Colorado.
Report reveals what Mariners are seeking on trade market
The Mariners have gotten off to a strong start this season with a 47-38 record that places them firmly in the driver’s seat of the AL West division race, 4.5 games ahead of the second-place Astros. Given that solid position in the standings, as the second half gets underway, it’s hardly surprising that Seattle plans to add to their team ahead of the trade deadline, which is scheduled for exactly one month from Sunday on July 30. Reporting last week indicated that the Mariners plan to be “aggressive” in improving their offense this summer, and today a report from MLBNetwork’s Jon Morosi added additional details regarding the club’s plans. Per Morosi, the Mariners have already begun exploring possible trades with other clubs and are currently prioritizing the addition of one everyday hitter, as well as help in the bullpen.
Veteran RHP opts out of minors deal with Orioles
The Orioles announced Sunday that veteran right-hander Julio Teheran has opted out of his minor league deal with the club. The 33-year-old veteran signed with Baltimore earlier this month after opting out of a previous minor league deal with the Cubs, but he’ll now return to free agency in search of a better opportunity elsewhere.
Giants designate pitcher for assignment after Dodgers debacle
The Giants announced that right-hander Spencer Howard has been designated for assignment. Fellow righty Landen Roupp was called up from Triple-A Sacramento in the corresponding move. Guardians switching things up in the starting rotation
The Guardians announced that Gavin Williams has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list, after the right-hander has been sidelined the entire season due to elbow discomfort. Williams will take the rotation spot of fellow righty Triston McKenzie, who has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus. To open a spot for Williams on the 40-man roster, Cleveland designated right-hander Darren McCaughan for assignment.
Rockies designate former intriguing prospect for assignment
The Rockies announced that first baseman Elehuris Montero has been designated for assignment. The move opens space for the return of catcher Elias Diaz, who has been activated from the 10-day injured list after missing just short of three weeks due to a strained left calf. Montero was one of...
Giants chairman discusses deadline amid 'inconsistent' first half
With a 40-44 record, the Giants sit in fourth place in the NL West but also still within striking distance of the playoffs, 3.5 games out of the last National League wild-card slot. Several other teams within the congested NL are in this same status of semi-contention, though expectations were certainly higher in the Bay Area after the Giants spent over $324M this past offseason.
Tigers not a given to move one of their best trade chips
The Tigers’ signing of right-hander Jack Flaherty has proved to be one of the best moves of the 2023-24 offseason through the first half of play this year. The 28-year-old has looked nothing short of fantastic since signing with Detroit on a one-year deal over the offseason. In 89 innings of work across 15 starts, Flaherty has posted a solid 3.24 ERA (129 ERA+) with a 3.04 FIP.
Mike Trout offers significant rehab update, return expectation
Fans around baseball received exciting news Saturday as veteran superstar Mike Trout told reporters (including Sam Blum of The Athletic) that he is “basically pain-free,” with only occasional soreness as he works his way back from surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee that he underwent at the end of April. Initial reporting suggested a recovery timeline in the range of six weeks was possible for the 32-year-old based on similar surgeries other players had undergone previously, though the Angels cautioned that they intended to take Trout’s rehab slowly in order to minimize the possibility of re-injury.

The Rangers subsequently announced that initial x-rays on Seager’s wrist were negative, though he’ll be evaluated further tomorrow to determine the severity of the issue.
Giants rotation could see two big injury returns in near future
The Giants have suffered a tough run of injuries to their starting rotation of late and with six starters on the injured list only Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks are currently in the San Francisco rotation as true full-time starters, although Spencer Howard and Hayden Birdsong have filled in to allow the Giants to cobble together a four-man rotation. Fortunately, it appears that could be changing in the near future as Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier Saturday that southpaws Blake Snell and Kyle Harrison are both making progress towards returns from injuries.
Rockies infielder with dependable glove elects free agency
The Rockies announced Saturday afternoon that infielder Alan Trejo has cleared outright waivers and opted to elect free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to the minor leagues. While Trejo does not have the requisite three year of service time typically necessary to reject the assignment, he was nonetheless able to do so after being outrighted previously back in January.
Red Sox first baseman clears up confusion regarding rehab
In an odd moment of miscommunication earlier this month, Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas told reporters earlier this month that he had begun to take dry swings while rehabbing torn cartilage in his midsection. That was exciting news regarding the 24-year-old’s progress, but MassLive’s Sean McAdam noted earlier this week that Casas’s previous comments do not appear to have been entirely accurate.
Brewers pitcher's breakout year halted by injury

Blue Jays closer to receive evaluation after continued elbow discomfort
Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano is set to visit Dr. Keith Meister on July 2, manager John Schneider told reporters (including the Athletic’s Kaitlyn McGrath and Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi). Romano has been on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation for almost a month, and his throwing work has now been halted for a second time due to continued soreness. Some soreness last week led to a pause for a few days, but Romano has been shut down from throwing entirely after a throwing session on Friday.
Outright Assignments: Kuhnel, Emanuel
Rounding up some recent outright assignments…. The Brewers outrighted Joel Kuhnel to Triple-A Nashville, as per the right-hander’s MLB.com profile page. Kuhnel was designated for assignment earlier this week, and for the second time this month, he has been outrighted off a team’s 40-man roster. The Blue Jays previously outrighted Kuhnel, and he opted for free agency and a subsequent minor league deal with Milwaukee. It isn’t yet known if he’ll choose free agency again over accepting this outright assignment, or if Kuhnel perhaps wants some stability after already being part of three different organizations in the last two months. A veteran of five big league seasons, Kuhnel’s 2024 resume consists of two innings in a single appearances with the Astros at the MLB level, and a 2.52 ERA over 25 Triple-A relief innings.

That’s left a vacancy at the back of Philly’s rotation and it’ll be filled – at least in the short term – by 25-year-old righty Michael Mercado, reports Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
