Twins to place pivotal infielder on 10-day injured list
The Twins will place Jose Miranda on the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game with the Giants, manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters (including Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press). Utilityman Diego Castillo will have his contract selected from Triple-A to take Miranda’s spot on the active roster and the Twins will have to make another move to clear space on the 40-man roster.
Red Sox reliever not yet ready to come off injured list
Chris Martin was retroactively placed on the 15-day injured list on July 4 and the Red Sox were hopeful that he could be activated this coming Friday on his first day of eligibility. However, Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe) that Martin is temporarily shut down since the reliever “didn’t feel great” after a game of catch on Friday.
Royals acquire RHP from Nationals
The Royals have bolstered their bullpen with the acquisition of right-hander Hunter Harvey, as the Nationals announced that Harvey will head to K.C. in exchange for third baseman Cayden Wallace and the Royals’ Competitive Balance Round A draft pick (39th overall) in the 2024 draft. The Royals also announced the move, as well as the news that right-hander Nick Anderson has been designated for assignment to create roster space for Harvey.
Star Marlins outfielder will see playing time at second base
Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been prominently floated in trade speculation as the deadline approaches and some more fuel was added to that fire with Saturday’s news that the Marlins will again be deploying Chisholm as a second baseman on at least a part-time basis. Chisholm took some grounders at second prior to the club's game with the Reds on Saturday and manager Skip Schumaker told reporters (including MLB.com’s Jeff Wallner) that Chisholm was happy “to do whatever’s best for the team.”
Dodgers' Dustin May won't pitch again in 2024 following surgery
Dodgers right-hander Dustin May underwent surgery earlier this week to fix a tear in his esophagus, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. The procedure will keep May from returning to the field this season, as Passan writes that May won’t be able to partake in any physical activity over the next two months as part of his recovery.
Struggling Rockies outfielder to miss time with back strain
The Rockies announced that outfielder Nolan Jones has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a low-back strain. The placement is retroactive to July 12. With right-hander Tanner Gordon also optioned to Triple-A Friday, Colorado called up outfielder Sean Bouchard from Triple-A and right-hander Angel Chivilli from Double-A Hartford.
Yankees place former Gold Glove-winning catcher on IL
Catcher Jose Trevino has been placed on the Yankees’ 10-day injured list due to a left quad strain, the team announced prior to Saturday's game. Carlos Narvaez was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move, and will now share catching duties with Austin Wells until Trevino recovers. The...
Orioles place outfielder on concussion IL after brawl-starting HBP
The Orioles announced that outfielder Heston Kjerstad has been placed on the seven-day injured list for concussion-related injuries. Outfielder Kyle Stowers was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to take Kjerstad’s place on the active roster. The injury stems from a scary incident in Friday’s 4-1 Orioles loss to the...
Orioles GM Mike Elias discusses trade-deadline approach
Orioles GM Mike Elias spoke to reporters prior to Saturday afternoon’s game against the Yankees and touched on a number of topics, including the club’s needs and goals ahead of the trade deadline as well as the status of two of the club’s key, upper-level prospects: infielders Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo. As noted by Roch Kubatko of MASN, Elias suggested to reporters that both Holliday and Mayo figure to factor into the club’s plans as “big contributors” in the second half this year.
Giants release two-time Gold Glove-winning shortstop
The Giants have released shortstop Nick Ahmed, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The club had designated him for assignment earlier this week. He’s now a free agent and can sign with any club. Coming into 2024, San Francisco seemed committed to moving on from the Brandon Crawford...
Astros Sign Aledmys Diaz To Minor League Deal
The Astros have signed veteran utility bat Aledmys Diaz to a minor league deal, per a team announcement. Diaz is set to report to the club’s complex in Florida rather than immediately be assigned to a minor league club. The news is something of a homecoming for Diaz, as...
Insider reveals Phillies' biggest need at MLB trade deadline
The Phillies are “prioritizing” finding a right-handed hitter to add to their outfield mix, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Gelb adds that Philadelphia is expected to make at least one trade to address its bench mix before the deadline. The organization cleared a spot in its...
Rockies righty to make first start after Tommy John surgery
The Rockies are set to activate right-hander German Marquez from the 60-day injured list on Sunday, manager Bud Black told reporters (including Mike Fitzpatrick of The Denver Post) last night. Colorado’s 40-man roster currently stands at 39, meaning the club will only need to make a corresponding active roster move to activate Marquez unless they add another player to the 40-man before activating him.
Orioles To Select Vinny Nittoli
The Orioles are selecting the contract of right-hander Vinny Nittoli, as MASN’s Roch Kubatko reported this morning. The righty signed with the club on a minor league deal earlier this month. The club will need to make a corresponding 40-man move in order to add Nittoli to the roster, though that could be accomplished by transferring lefty Danny Coulombe to the 60-day injured list.
White Sox release veteran reliever
The White Sox released reliever Joe Barlow from his minor league contract, reports James Fegan of Sox Machine. The right-hander had been pitching at Triple-A Charlotte. Barlow has spent most of the year on the injured list. He wasn’t able to make his Triple-A debut until June 5. Barlow took the ball 12 times for Charlotte over the past five weeks. He was hit hard, serving up 14 runs across 11 2/3 innings. While he struck out 14 opponents, he also walked eight and was tagged for five home runs. That wasn’t going to get him a look even in a Chicago bullpen that has been one of the league’s worst.
Guardians release veteran righty
The Guardians released righty Wes Parsons, according to the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. Cleveland had a week to trade him or run him through waivers after they designated for assignment last Friday. That came as the corresponding 40-man roster move when Cleveland landed Spencer Howard in a minor trade with the Giants.

Four-time Gold Glove winner clears waivers
Kevin Kiermaier went unclaimed on waivers, the center fielder tells Hazel Mae and Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. GM Ross Atkins informed Kiermaier of the news Friday. The Jays placed the defensive stalwart on waivers earlier in the week. The development was reported Thursday, but it’s likely Toronto made the move on Wednesday. (The waiver resolution process takes 48 hours.) The Jays were hoping that another team would place a claim and assume the approximate $4.5M remaining on his $10.5M salary. All 29 other teams passed on that opportunity.
Rays have reportedly received trade interest in All-Star infielder
In a recent column at The New York Post, Jon Heyman looks at some notable players that could be dealt before the deadline. Heyman lists Rays infielder Isaac Paredes and says that “his name is out there more” than his teammate, outfielder Randy Arozarena. It’s unsurprising that Paredes...
