MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — $16 million is being invested into rebuilding 17 blocks of St. Louis Street in downtown Mobile.

The Mobile City Council has approved an agreement with the State of Alabama for $4 million in federal transportation funding allocated through the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization. That funding will be added to the $12 million funded by the RESTORE Act.

The project will include new road surfaces, sidewalks, streetscaping, curbs, gutters, drainage features, over 50 new trees and additional on-street parking.

The construction will start on Broad Street and end on Water Street.

Businesses like the Cheese Cottage say they look forward to the upgrades.

“It’s in due time; it’s about time that something be upholstered,” server Destiny Kerly said.

David Nelson said he’s also excited about the upgrades.

“We’re excited and glad that the city is doing the infrastructure work along the street to make it look like the block we are on, which is nice and inviting,” Nelson said.

The two-year construction timeline, however, does raise concerns.

“We’ve seen some long-term construction projects like that around town, and it can definitely be a detractor to people coming in the general area,” Nelson said.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025 following Mardi Gras. The city plans to move construction block by block to limit the impact on businesses and keep traffic fluid.
