UPDATE (5:48 p.m.): The City of Mobile’s Parks and Recreation Department has covered graffiti at Langan (Municipal) Park that praised Donald Trump’s attempted assassin.
The skate ramp graffiti, discovered Tuesday morning, featured the phrase, “RIP Thomas Matthew Crooks.” Crooks was the 20-year-old who the Secret Service says shot Trump in the ear on Saturday at a political rally in Pennsylvania.
“It really made what’s left of my hair stand up,” one passerby said.
The rally was two days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where Trump was officially named the Republican Party’s 2024 Presidential nominee.
Included in the graffiti, “#BLM,” which stands for “Black Lives Matter,” was spray painted in the upper-left corner of the skate ramp.
A Communist “Hammer and Sickle” was spray-painted next to the phrase “1848 A.D. – Forever,” possibly in reference to Karl Marx’s publication of his Communist manifesto in February 1848.
So, what should be the vandal’s punishment?
“I think he should get a nice, stiff fine and have to pay for the restoration of the paint job he did,” the passerby said.
The Mobile Police Department said this type of vandalism is classified as criminal mischief. Depending on the dollar amount in damage, a degree will be assigned, punishable by up to $2,500 in fines.
MPD is investigating this as vandalism, and they’ve started doing close patrols for the next few days.
UPDATE (1:40 p.m.) : Graffiti honoring former President Donald Trump’s accused attempted assassin won’t remain on the skate ramp at a Mobile park for long, News 5 has learned.
The City of Mobile tells News 5 they will remove the unwanted spray-painted artwork as soon as possible.
