MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — City officials say drivers on one West Mobile Road won’t have to wait much longer for some relief from the construction.

Many Mobile drivers are familiar with the construction project that’s been going on since 2021 on Ziegler Boulevard. The traffic that results from that construction seems to have become routine for residents like Rebecca Bischof, who drives Zeigler Boulevard almost every day.

“You’ve closed some of our roads that would allow us to get out,” said Bischof. “And you don’t have citizens that are always going to be kind enough after like, you know, 20 or 30 minutes, they may be, and let you out so you can get the kids to school.”

But there is relief is on the way as Mobile City Engineer, Nick Amberger, said that the city hopes to open all lanes on Ziegler Blvd by the end of August this year.

The widening project was funded with $24 million to make Ziegler four lanes, from Schillinger to Springhill. Now, all that’s left is the work between University Blvd and Cody Rd S.

The project was broken up into three phases, and officials say the final phase is almost complete.

“The construction that’s happening right now is it’s buttoning up some concrete work with some drainage that’s in the median and some of the islands. And then the final asphalt layer,” said Amberger.

Residents are not the only ones looking forward to this project to be finished. Some businesses said that the construction has taken a hit on their profits.

Paul Hart, Owner of Kings of Cutz, said, “We’re losing business. And you’ve got some businesses that are actually closing because of what’s going on.”

Amberger thanks the public for their patience and understands projects like these can be disruptive to normal day-to-day life.

“Hopefully they enjoy the fruits of that disruption for many years to come,” said Amberger.
