Closing the Wage Gap for Black Women
September 21st marks the date of National Black Women's Equal Pay Day. This day is to show awareness of the economic disparities working Black women face. According to Equal Pay Today, Census data from 2022 shows a wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men. The gap is .67 cents for full time, year-round workers and .64 cents for all workers (including part time). Basically, for every .64 cents a Black woman makes, another person makes a dollar. The average Black woman must work nearly seven full months longer to earn the same as the average man earns.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage and Mexican Independence: Loveland, CO
On September 16, 1810, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo gave a speech in the town of Dolores, Mexico. He urged Mexicans to revolt against Spanish colonial rule. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated every year throughout Colorado. The celebrations usually include parades, music, dance, and food. There are many events going on this weekend throughout the state. But in Denver at the El Grito celebration, in Civic Center Park in Denver they reenact the famous “Cry of Dolores” speech by Miguel Hidalgo.

Oberlin: A Village Rooted in Freedom
In the late 1860’s, the freed enslaved of the Raleigh, North Carolina area founded Oberlin Village. It was the largest Reconstruction Era black settlement in Wake County. By the 1880’s approximately 160 families lived in Oberlin Village. They established churches, a school, and by 1892 Latta University.
