But when this unsuspecting family wanted to renovate their backyard, they did not expect to find her preserved cast iron casket and mummified body. The casket had a glass window that showed her in almost perfect condition. Who was she? Why was she in their backyard?

I recently wrote the article "Eternal Love: The Concept of Couple's Coffins." While researching that article, I came across the most unusual patents for our dearly departed. These are just a few of the unusual inventions I encountered for the dead. Everything from dead ringers to coffin handholding to metal coffins that preserve the body for a very long time.

With Valentine’s Day approaching we rack our brains for a gift. Roses? Chocolate? A couple’s coffin? huh!. It is true that there is such a thing. if you plan right, you do not need to take the phrase “till death do us part” to heart. Your bodies could spend eternity together. It is common to see couples have their graves next to each other in the same plot. It is also common to have families share plots and graves. So why not a couple’s coffin!

Mamie Geneva Doud Eisenhower was born in 1896, in Boone, Iowa. She was the daughter of John Sheldon Doud and Elivera Mathilda Carlson Doud. When Mamie was nine, the family moved to Colorado. when. Mamie attended local Denver public schools. In 1915, she graduated from the private Wolcott School. The Wolcott was a former school for girls located at 1410 N Marion St. Denver. The Wolcott School building is still standing. This historic Cheesman Park neighborhood building has been converted into an apartment complex.

Unexpected Family History: My Connection to Bentonville Battlefield
I had no idea the surprise I would find about my family history that day. It was a nice summer’s day. We were driving from the Outer Banks to Raleigh, North Carolina. We approached a sign saying, “Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, next exit.” Having some extra time before our airplane took off, we took the exit onto the country road to see the battlefield. I didn’t know much about this Civil War battle and how I was personally connected to it.
