CamelliaView 2024
I guess the saying is now February showers bring March flowers. Friends, the camellias are amazing this year. The camellias in my yard are going crazy as you can see here and are exploding in color. Did you know that some 100-year old camellias may reach 25 feet tall? Wow.
March Into the Arts
March is here already, and we have survived Godzilla vs Modesto in February at the State Theatre, and hoping for a repeat. February 18, Hocus Manriquez and crew, Leon Henry, Zsanise, and Zspirit unveiled Mural 3 for Stanislaus Arts Council Heartland Grant at Hocus Ink in Ceres. The previous two murals in the series were at Johnny’s Market on 4th Street, Modesto, and Modesto Livestock Auction and Flea Market on 7th Street.

Long Distance Running Tips
Long Distance Running Tips. I’ve been racing for over 20 years. If I knew then what I know now, I would have changed my running skills altogether. No one ever told me that running long distances for many years can have negative effects on your body as you age. Don’t get me wrong, I love to run. It was my forte. In the triathlon, I was always able to chase the leaders in the swim and hold my own on the bike, but when it came to the running part, that’s when I would start to pick them off to win the race. Truth be told, it wasn’t a big deal to train like an Olympian if you have grand illusions of being a middle-aged Olympian.
Modesto Nuts General Manager Veronica Hernandez
Meet Veronica Hernandez, the trail-blazing General Manager of the Modesto Nuts, who made history as the first Latina to ever hold this prestigious position in Minor League Baseball and the first woman to manage the Nuts. It’s a long journey from her small hometown in Connecticut, where Veronica, as a first-generation American, fell in love with sports during third-grade recess. Her passion for sports marketing was ignited in high school, and she pursued it further by earning a Bachelor of Science in Sports Media from Ithaca College.
The Opera and the Octopus
The octopus is my spirit animal. They are clever, curious, enigmatic, and occasionally mischievous creatures. I enjoy reading about them, and high on my experience wishlist is getting to pet one at an aquarium; perhaps I’ll even dive with some one day. I’ve built quite a collection of octopusian objects. There’s an octopus painting, an octopus-headed cane, an octopus sugar bowl, an octopus wine stopper, an orange glass blown octopus-tentacle-shaped shot glass, and a blue knitted octopus my lady commissioned for me to match her red one. Octopuses seem to show up everywhere we go. My lady’s best friend even plays in an accordion ensemble performing classical music. Their name? Bachtopus.
How to Guide to Entertainment Permits
It is unlawful for any person to own, conduct, operate, maintain, or participate therein any place of entertainment in the City of Modesto without first having obtained an Entertainment Permit. Failure to obtain an Entertainment Permit can result in penalties under Municipal Code 4-1.420. It is necessary to complete a Business Entertainment Permit Application to obtain your Entertainment Permit.
ZenView – For the Children
Good news : On January 29th two elementary schools in Modesto brought Tai Chi to their after-school program. It’s been going very well, after only a couple of weeks the kids are having fun and are acting more relaxed. They pay attention and it appears that they love disciplined play. At one point, when one child didn’t know how to do a specific movement, another kid seemed very happy to help that kid how to do it. One of the best benefits of Tai Chi for kids and adults alike, is that it helps to develop self-confidence, a sense of self-worth as well as a humble attitude. It would be great for the relationship between parents and their kids if they could study and practice Tai Chi together!
WalkA MileView
Our high heels are on and we are training to “Walk a Mile” in her shoes. Why? We have no use for domestic abuse. This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe.
FilmView – 48 Hour Film
One of Modesto’s most creative events happens this month would make George Lucas proud. This is a fun night of presentations and is one of the more creative Modesto experiences. Be a part of this event by attending or sponsoring. ModestoView is a proud Award Sponsor and you never know where the next George Lucas will come from. Might as well be Modesto USA right?
LibraryView
For Friends of the Modesto Library, two events will make 2024 a year like no other. The first is the 50th anniversary celebration at the March 6 annual membership meeting. The other event is a major fund-raising campaign to coincide with the anticipated temporary closure of the library later this year. The vision is that when the library reopens in 2025, people will see a brighter, more modern, more useable, more beautiful facility. You will hear more about the fund-raising campaign in coming months.
PoetryView – Valentine Haiku Winners
Here we are in March, continuing our quest to discover the thoughts inside of people’s heads, from short form Haiku to the long form. One of the coolest blocks in town is J Street between 13th and 14th. From the Intermission, the Jewel, the State, Noah’s to labs of Lofi, there are good things happening. Best of all, you can do this. There are writer’s nights and Haiku nights. I had fun going and trying out some of my words. I didn’t win, but I got out there, put myself in front of people and have it a shot. You can do it too.
