It’s shaping up to be a great year for Molalla cross country.
Head coach Kenny Schoenfeld likely can’t help but feel hopeful about his program as a whole. The boys’ team returned to the state meet after missing in 2022, totaling 146 points and finishing fourth overall. Of the seven runners that competed, all but two are returning, leaving a reliable core to build off last year’s foundation.
Junior Otto Terry is the fastest returner for the boys, boasting a personal best of 17 minutes, 7.70 seconds. Sophomore Nick Wood is behind him at 17:32.70, while senior John Hayes is third at 17:45.10. Evan Wood and Isaac Marshal round out of the group at 17:56 and 18:08.10, respectively.
The girls' side looks just as promising. Although Molalla failed to qualify for the state meet, sending just one athlete, Annalyse Jenson, to Eugene, the team finished third at districts and will return six of their varsity runners, none of which are seniors.
A trip to state for both teams is by no means guaranteed, but it’s definitely no longshot. If the teams hope to do it, here’s the road they will take to get there. Molalla is certainly welcoming all challengers in 2024, as the smallest competition the school will attend is a five-team meet in its season opener.
