Oregon’s largest outdoor learning day for woodland caretakers and tree enthusiasts returns to Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Mulino on Saturday, Oct. 5.

OSU Extension’s Tree School has been hosting forestry education programs for 34 years in Clackamas County, including the flagship Tree School Clackamas each spring at Clackamas Community College.

To foster year-round learning opportunities for the woodland owning community, Tree School Field Day was started in 2022.

“Our Tree School Field Day takes what makes Tree School a cherished tradition – learning from local experts, community-building, and networking with natural resource organizations – and brings it to the great outdoors,” said Sarah Cameron, forestry program assistant and Tree School coordinator at the Clackamas County Extension office in Oregon City.

The day will include a roster of field-based workshops, demonstrations, and self-guided learning stations that students can choose from. Attendees will have five class periods to craft their own unique Tree School Field Day experience.

Topics this year will include bigleaf maple sugaring, drones for aerial surveying, forest health, habitat piles to support forest wildlife, introduction to beekeeping, logging with a tractor and winch, Oregon’s native bees, pruning your trees, sawmill demonstration, selling your logs, uneven-aged forest management, weed management principles, wildfire & home defensible space, and woodland spoon carving demonstration.

Registration is limited to 125 attendees. The cost is $35 per adult or $20 per youth, which includes morning coffee and snacks, plus a boxed lunch.

Pre-registration is required. Attendees will receive a copy of the schedule, class descriptions, and map prior to the Tree School Field Day.

For registration information, visit the website (extension.oregonstate.edu/Clackamas/events/) stop by the OSU Extension office at 200 Warner Milne Road, Oregon City or call 503-655-8631.
