BELOIT — After outscoring Monmouth College 25-3 in sweeping a double-header on the road on Saturday, Beloit College’s baseball team had to wait a day to finish the series due to Sunday’s soggy forecast.

Apparently they left their mojo in Monmouth.

The Scots (16-17, 9-11 MWC) bounced back to win the series finale at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium, 8-4, on Monday, despite another long homer by record-setting slugger Brett Kiger.

The Buccaneers (21-14, 14-10) trailed from the outset as Monmouth put up three runs in the first inning off starter Kaiya Nishino (3-2). The Scots allowed a run in the third, but got it back in the fourth and added two in both the sixth and eighth innings. The Bucs got three in the eighth, but it wasn’t near enough.

Nishino worked one inning, allowing three hits and three earned runs. Tommy Murray worked a scoreless inning and Eamon Burke pitched four innings and was touched for five hits and three runs. Harvey Pena finished up, going three innings and allowing two hits and two runs.

Monmouth starter Ethan Zaayenga (3-1) pitched 7 1-3 innings and allowed eight hits and four runs. Brandon Coats came in to get the final two outs in the eighth and Nick Villa pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Bucs matched Monmouth’s 10 hits, but stranded eight baserunners. One of the hits was Kiger’s 45th career home run, a three-run blast in the eighth inning. He also has a team-record 17 homers for the season.

Beloit’s Jack Alport was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Connor Vogel was the only other Buc with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Monmouth was led by Alexander Dye, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Raul Guillermo and Nathan Reed, who each hit home runs.

    • UP NEXT: The Bucs will host non-conference foe Aurora at noon on Sunday. After that it will be the four-team MWC Tournament hosted by Lawrence. While Beloit has completed league play, several teams still have games this week. No. 1 seed Lawrence will play the fourth-seeded team and the No. 2 and No. 3 teams will play. Beloit is currently No. 3.
