Man bitten by shark while spearfishing in the Florida Keys
(CNN) — A man was recovering Monday after being bitten by a shark off Key West in Florida, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said. The victim was spearfishing along a reef when he was bitten on the leg Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

Florida Woman Arrested For Grocery Theft And Then Selling The Stolen Goods
A 53-year-old Florida woman, faces charges of larceny and dealing in stolen property after allegedly stealing over $1,500 worth of groceries from a Winn-Dixie on Big Pine Key. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Rebecca Lea Lunsford of Little Torch Key was caught on surveillance cameras leaving the store with unpaid groceries on two separate occasions in June.

Milodjina’s Summer with the Key West Police: A Journey of Learning and Growth. Milodjina Pierrilus, 17, a participant in the 2024 A Positive Step of Monroe County “Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment Program,” has spent part of her summer interning with the Key West Police Department, working with Property and Evidence Supervisor Megan Wilcox and also participating in a couple of “ride-alongs” with KWPD officers as they go about their patrols. Milodjina was born in Haiti and moved to Key West as a young child. She’s a 2024 Key West High School incoming senior who does her own hair braiding and helps take care of her eight-year-old brother while her parents are at work. She said that this is her first job and she enjoyed seeing and working with the different types of evidence in the Property and Evidence Department and participating in the “ride-alongs” where she experienced radar speed checks and learned about doing license plate searches for outstanding warrants. Milodjina plans to attend Florida International University in Miami and study business management or finance.
Students do well overall on year-end state tests
Local public school students outperformed the state average in writing in fourth through 10th grades, according to recently released Florida state testing results. Monroe County School District Superintendent Theresa Axford said the district’s emphasis on Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) strategies, which focus on writing, propelled the students.
