Two injured as trusses collapse at Smarr station
Two workers were hurt on Tuesday, July 16, when they fell 16 feet as ceiling trusses they were on collapsed at the Smarr fire station under construction off Rumble Road. Monroe County EMS responded to reports that the trusses had collapsed at the construction site on Ray Hartley Road, off Rumble Road. The contractor, Robert Muckenfuss of Proform Construction, arrived at the scene and told the Reporter that something had gone wrong while the framing subcontractor was working. Muckenfuss said they don’t know what happened because the trusses were installed properly. He said it may be something mechanical. He said both workers had minor injuries and would not need hospitalization. However, Monroe County EMS later took the two workers by ambulance to Monroe County Hospital. EMS chief Matt Jackson told the Reporter they were very lucky to escape with scrapes and bruises. “It could have been a lot worse,” said Jackson. The county is having to build a new Smarr fire station because the original one burned down in 2021. Jackson joked that he’s starting to wonder if Station 10 is cursed. Muckenfuss said he’s already ordered new trusses and they’re ready to return to work.
