MONROE, La.  ( KTVE/KARD ) — A student from Monroe is competing in a national conference after winning a regional competition in architectural drafting.

Tarren Harvey is a nontraditional student who attends Texas State Technical College.  He will be competing in Atlanta, Georgia, at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in the architectural drafting category.

Harvey says that his passion for architectural drafting began in his 7th grade vocational career class after working with design software.

“I went home that day, and my mom made sure I had the software at home, so, ever since then, it’s just grown,” Harvey said.

At the conference, various workshops will take place as well as a community service project: building bikes for children in Atlanta.

Harvey says that in preparation for the conference, his daily coursework at TSTC and internship in drafting have helped him perfect his skills.

He encourages students everywhere to pursue anything that they put their minds to, and different classes are very critical towards success.

“Never stop, even if it’s your first, second, third try; never stop pursuing your passion,” Harvey said.

Harvey will be competing on June 24-28.  If he wins, he will advance to the France WorldSkills Conference 2024 in September.

KTVE/KARD wishes Tarren the best of luck in this competition and in his future endeavors.
