Joining MFD in May 1988, Chief Williams has played a significant role in enhancing Monroe’s residents’ safety and well-being. His service began in the US Army Reserves from 1987 to 2007, including a deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom.

During his time, Chief Williams maintained the city’s Class I Fire Rating, established a new Fire Communication Center, rebuilt the Breard Street Fire Station, updated the department’s fleet, and acquired a Mobile Command Unit.

Kenneth Maxey will serve as the Interim Fire Chief, who began his career in 1973, retired in 2006 as Chief of Training, and returned in 2013 as a Professional Standards Compliance Officer. Williams also greatly maintained the department’s Class 1 fire insurance rating in 2016 and 2021.

“The retirement of Chief Terry Williams marks the end of an era for the Monroe Fire Department. “His leadership, leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the safety of our community will leave a lasting mark. We are profoundly grateful for his service and wish him the very best in his well-deserve retirement. Kenneth Maxey brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of excellence to the role of Interim Fire Chief. His leadership will ensure a seamless transition and the continued success of our fire department.”

    Mayor, Friday Ellis

Chief Williams’ legacy will inspire future generations of firefighters and community leaders and significantly enhance public safety across Monroe.
