MONROE, La. (KTVE/KARD)–In a new law passed by the state legislature and signed by Governor Jeff Landry, Louisiana high school seniors will no longer be required to take the ACT test across the board.

Monroe resident Forrest Adams graduated in 2018 and he took both the ACT and the SAT before he graduated, but the new rule for high school senior does not require them for all students.

“We’ve pushed the idea that college is necessary for all career paths and it’s one of the only ways to advance in a career or any sort of measurement of society or education.”

Adams agrees with the new measure that recognizes the college is not for everyone.

“Trade schools, arts all of these other things are very important and can get you very far much more than just mathematics, English, science which are the core focuses of tests.”

Seniors not taking the ACT would be not be exempt from all standardizes tests. Depending on their career path they would have to take either the Work Keys assessment or the Armed Services Aptitude Battery. Daniel Landreaux is a former substitute teacher who also agrees with the change.

“I don’t think that the test should be required. There is an issue of personal responsibility involved in all of this. Each of us is responsible for educating ourselves as well as a lot of other life choices.”

And now seniors not headed to college can cross taking the ACT off their to do list.
