MONROE —The Great Start Collaborative (GSC) is hosting Let's Talk About Music at the Monroe County Fair with a free music concert, giveaways and games for young children.
Planned for Tuesday, Kids Day, when children up to age 17 will be admitted free until 5 p.m., Beverly Meyer, “the Music Lady,” will perform a free music concert at the free stage from 3-5 p.m.
“We know that the Monroe County Fair is a huge part of the culture of Monroe County and we strive to reach as many families in Monroe as possible with the events that we hold,” Bridgette Halcomb, Great Start Collaborative director, said in an email. “We thought that holding the event on Kids Day would give us an opportunity to provide something special for the children in the early childhood age range, which is 0-8 years old.”
Halcomb said Meyer has been sharing songs with preschools, elementary schools, libraries and other children's organizations since 1996.
“She captivates young audiences and encourages them to participate, sing and dance along and grow their imaginations,” she said. “She has performed in a few different library systems and preschools here in Monroe County throughout the years.”
GSC focuses on getting young children ready for school and building a strong foundation for their social-emotional development, health and lifelong learning.
“Music and movement in the early childhood years helps the developing mind to expand cognition, communication and imagination skills,” Halcomb said. “We know that young children learn from play and having fun, and participating in musical activities together can help developing social skills and self-esteem.”
