    Four-alarm fire breaks out at Michigan College of Beauty

    MONROE — A four-alarm fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at the Michigan College of Beauty located on the 1020 block of South Monroe Street. Seventeen firefighters were treated for heat-related symptoms. One was transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital and was in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

    Monroe County Central Dispatch received several 911 calls about smoke coming from the vacant building next to the Michigan College of Beauty around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

    Fire crews from the City of Monroe; Monroe, Dundee, Frenchtown, Summerfield, Erie, Ida and Bedford townships; City of Luna Pier; and London-Maybee-Raisinville as well as the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Monroe Police Department all reported to the scene to find heavy black smoke coming from the building.

    Also assisting were Monroe Community Ambulance, the American Red Cross and Lake Erie Transit.

    "All of the students and employees at Michigan College of Beauty are safe," the school posted on its Facebook page. "The fire seems to have started in the vacant building next door. We would like to thank the police and fire departments for responding so quickly."

    The fire is under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Investigation Team.
