MONTAGUE, Mass. (WWLP) – The South Street bridge in Montague Center will be closed for an estimated one year due to a bridge replacement project.

According to the Town of Montague, the South Street bridge closed on Monday is expected to re-open to pedestrian and vehicle traffic by June 2025. The bridge replacement project is overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the construction will be performed by Tully Construction Corp.

The project consists of fully replacing the bridge that carries South Street, a rural two-lane road over the Sawmill River, according to MassDOT . This project was initiated because the existing bridge is too low for design storm flood levels, the bridge is not properly aligned with the channel, traffic is restricted to a single lane, and there is deterioration to the structure.

The goals for the bridge replacement projects consist of adjusting abutment locations based on the Massachusetts Stream Crossing Standards, raising the bridge profile to improve storm clearance, restoring the bridge to two lanes of travel, and limiting impacts to private properties and environmentally sensitive areas.
