The 1948 Tucker '48, an iconic symbol of automotive innovation, is set to be a highlight at the upcoming Monterey Jet Center 2024 auction, hosted by Broad Arrow Auctions. With an estimated value between $1,500,000 and $2,000,000, this remarkable vehicle is the third production car by serial number and features numerous early characteristics that make it a coveted collector's item.

The Tucker '48, often referred to as the "Tucker Torpedo," was conceived during the immediate post-World War II era by visionary Preston Tucker. It was designed to be a groundbreaking American family car, emphasizing safety and performance. With features like a frameless unibody design, a pop-out safety windshield, a central "cyclops" headlight that turned with the steering, a padded dashboard, and an integrated rollbar, the Tucker '48 was decades ahead of its time. It also boasted a rear-mounted, flat six-cylinder engine with an aluminum block and heads, delivering remarkable performance for its era.

Despite its innovative design and a successful initial public offering that raised $17 million, the Tucker Corporation faced significant challenges. Preston Tucker's ambitious fundraising strategies, which included selling dealerships and accessories before the cars were completed, drew scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The resulting legal battles, combined with potential interference from the "Big Three" automakers, ultimately led to the company's downfall. Chassis No. 1003, finished in "600 Royal Maroon" over a "940 Beige" interior, is a testament to Tucker's vision. This vehicle, one of only 51 Tuckers ever produced, was completed after March 1948 and is equipped with its original engine, numbered "4". The car features a modified Cord transaxle, which was used in the first 15 Tuckers, and sits on a 128-inch wheelbase. Notably, it is the first production car to feature the filler panel between the front bumper and body, positioning the center headlight behind the bumper.

The car's extensive ownership history includes notable figures such as Bill Pettit and George Lucas, the executive producer of the 1988 film "Tucker: The Man and His Dream." Lucas housed the car at Skywalker Ranch for many years. Over its lifetime, Chassis No. 1003 has been meticulously documented by marque experts Mark Lieberman and Mike Tucker, in collaboration with the Cammack Tucker Archives at the AACA Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

In the early 2000s, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration process, which included straightening and refitting body panels, restoring or crafting interior fittings and upholstery, and addressing chromework. The restoration, primarily conducted by Bata Mataja's B.A.D. Company in Sun Valley, California, brought the car back to its original glory. Tucker expert Martyn Donaldson oversaw extensive mechanical sorting during this period.

Today, Chassis No. 1003 stands as a beautifully restored example of one of America's most innovative cars.
