WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Paris Olympics kick off this week and some local gymnasts are ready to see their favorite athletes compete. Many aspiring Olympians at Roots Gymnastics Center in Westfield are eagerly anticipating the start of the Olympics this Friday. These young girls tell 22News, that they will be rooting for the USA team and cheering them on every step of the way. They will be closely watching the performances of seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles and other top gymnasts. Adding, they hope to one day follow in their footsteps, and represent their country on the world stage.

Small classes allow for in-depth projects at Westfield’s Vacation Academy
WESTFIELD — Kate Perez, math supervisor for Westfield schools, and Karoline Kells, assistant principal at Westfield Middle School, were excited to tour some of the classes at the two-week Project Lead the Way Summer Vacation Academy at Highland Elementary School July 8-19. The academy was funded by an Acceleration Academy grant of $173,000, and served kindergarten through sixth grade. Preschoolers also had a class funded by the Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative. Altogether, 245 students and 30 teachers participated in the camp.

Man arrested for stealing woman’s car at gunpoint in Winsted
WINSTED, CT (WFSB) – A man is facing charges for stealing a woman’s car at gunpoint in Winsted over the weekend, according to police. Authorities said 48-year-old Scott Blass, of Winsted, was arrested and charged with robbery first-degree, conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery involving occupied motor vehicle, criminal use of a firearm, obliteration of serial number, criminal possession of a firearm,, carrying a pistol without a permit, larceny of a motor vehicle, larceny fourth-degree, unlawful restraint, assault third-degree, strangulation second-degree, interfering with an officer, destruction of evidence, and breach of peace second-degree.
