An official with the Alabama Community College System said Wednesday that summer enrollment is up in comparison to this time last year.

Neil Scott, vice chancellor of student success, said that, as of Tuesday, 48,571 students registered for summer classes. He said that is 4.64% ahead of last summer.

“We still have some time to enroll some new students,” he said.

He also said that credit hour production is up by 4.43% ahead in comparison to last summer.

For fall registration, not all colleges have begun registration. Over 30,000 students have registered, he said.

He said that there are some challenges to fall registration, referencing issues with FAFSA. The FAFSA this year has caused problems for students across the country after attempted simplification.

“That is something that we need to keep a close eye on,” he said.

Scott said that communication needs to be better with students than it has ever been.

He said they are ahead by around 10.5% ahead in applications for Fall year to date. He said the highest increases are in dual enrollment, transfer students and dual enrollment.

Since Aug. 1, noncredit enrollment, workforce and adult education have enrolled 34,823 students. This summer, 2,957 students have registered.
