State Sen. Garlan Gudger Jr., 49, sustained severe injuries after a relative hit the back of his Sea-Doo with his own, authorities said.

Gudger was injured when Garlan Gudger III, 21, hit the rear of his Sea-Doo at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday in the Little Crooked Creek portion of Lewis Smith Lake, Sgt. Jeremy Burkett confirmed Friday.

The collision caused both men to be thrown into the water, and the senator was transported via helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for medical treatment, Burkett said.
